Timmerman was detained by Syrian authorities shortly after entering the country without proper documentation. Despite the dire reputation of these facilities, Timmerman reported that his experience was relatively tolerable.
“I was never beaten,” he shared in an interview with CBS News. However, his imprisonment was not without its challenges. Timmerman recounted the limited access to basic facilities, stating that he was only allowed to use the bathroom three times a day. “I’m feeling well. I’ve been fed and I’ve been watered, so I’m feeling well,” he told CBS News.

Timmerman’s story drew initial speculation that he could be Austin Tice, an American journalist who disappeared in Damascus in 2012 while covering the anti-Assad uprising. The physical resemblance and circumstances of Timmerman’s discovery fueled this speculation until it was confirmed that he was not Tice.
The confusion underscores the risks faced by foreigners in Syria, where disappearances, kidnappings, and detentions are tragically common.
