The 60-year-old veteran Democrat came to the public's attention with a series of direct TV appearances after President Joe Biden decided not to run for a second term. He has made his state a stronghold of liberal policies. This year, it is one of only a few states that will protect fans who buy tickets online for Taylor Swift concerts and other live events.

In their first rally together, Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who was just named Harris's running mate, talked about their plans for the country and how they plan to beat Donald Trump in November.

Walz was in the Army National Guard

Career of Tim Walz

Political campaigns

Walz makes the choice to run for Congress in 2006. From September 12, 2006, to September 13, 2007, Walz had no competition for the DFL nomination for the seat. In the general election on November 7, he beat Republican Gil Gutknecht and took office on January 3, 2007.

In 2008, 62% of the vote gave him a second term. He was only the second non-Republican to win a second full term in the district. In 2010, he beat State Representative Randy Demmer with 50% of the vote to win a third term. He won again in 2012 and 2014.

Walz in 2014

Walz was sworn in as the highest-ranking retired enlisted soldier to ever serve in Congress. He is also only the fourth Democrat or DFLer to represent the 1st District. Before him, there was Thomas Wilson (1887–1899), William Harries (1891–1893), and Tim Penny (1983–1995).

Walz is a member of the Armed Services Committee, the Committee on Veterans' Affairs, and the Agriculture Committee in the House. Walz and Keith Ellison, another Democrat from Minnesota, were against President Bush's plan to send more troops to Iraq. Walz co-sponsored a bill to raise the minimum wage in his first week as a lawmaker. He also voted in favor of stem cell research, let Medicare negotiate drug prices, and said he supported pay-as-you-go budget rules, which say that new spending or tax changes can't make the federal deficit bigger.

On December 2012, Planned Parenthood gave Walz a perfect score of 100. In 2011, the ACLU did the same. From 2009–10, the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the AFL–CIO, the Teamsters, and NOW also gave him a perfect score of 100. The National Taxpayers' Union, Citizens against Government Waste, Americans for Tax Reform, and Freedom Works have all given him one-digit ratings in the past few years. In 2010, the US Chamber of Commerce gave him a 25% grade. The Lugar Center - McCourt School Bipartisan Index for 2015 ranks Walz fourth.
