Who is Larry Hogan?
Governor Lawrence J. Hogan, Jr. was sworn in as the 62nd governor of the State of Maryland on January 21, 2015. In 2018, he was overwhelmingly re-elected to a second four-year term, receiving the most votes of any Maryland gubernatorial candidate and becoming only the second Republican governor to be re-elected in the 242-year history of the state, according to Governor.maryland.gov.
Early Life of Larry Hogan
Born in 1956 and raised in Landover, Prince George’s County, his interest in politics and governing began at an early age, when his father, Lawrence J. Hogan, Sr., was elected to the U.S. Congress for Maryland’s 5th district.
Governor Hogan attended Florida State University, earning a Bachelors Degree in Government. During this time he also worked in the Tallahassee State House.
As a young man, Governor Hogan worked on his father’s campaigns, at first stuffing envelopes and knocking on doors, and eventually helping to manage them.

Governor Hogan is married to Yumi Hogan, a first generation Korean-American, artist and teacher. She is the first Asian first lady in Maryland history and the first Korean-American first lady in United States history.
They have three daughters: Julie, Jaymi, and Kim; four grandchildren: Daniella, Cam, Ada and Nora; and two dogs, Anna and Chessie, whom they rescued from BARCS animal shelter in Baltimore City in 2018.
Career Path
In 1974, his father, Congressman Larry Hogan, Sr., despite personal considerations, cast aside party politics and became the first Republican to vote for President Nixon’s impeachment, and the only Republican to vote for all three articles of impeachment. Governor Hogan says he learned more about integrity from his father in that single moment than most people learn in a lifetime.
In 1972, Congressman Hogan became County Executive Hogan of Prince George’s County and at the age of 22. The Governor cites his father as his greatest influence and biggest role model.
In 1985, after his father’s term as County Executive, Governor Hogan left public service for the private sector and entered the real estate industry and founded Hogan Companies.
In 2003, Mr. Hogan took leave from his business and once again joined the public sector.
In 2007, when the Ehrlich administration concluded, Mr. Hogan went back to the private sector, believing he might never again serve the people of his state in a public position.
In 2011, Mr. Hogan founded the grassroots organization Change Maryland. As the Chair of Change Maryland, Larry Hogan traveled across the State listening to the concerns of Marylanders from all walks of life.
In 2014, he announced his campaign for governor. That same year, Governor Hogan was elected on a message of fiscal restraint in order to grow the private sector; put people back to work; and turn the economy around.
The Governor’s success and experience in the private sector, combined with his experience in government, give him a clear understanding of how government policy can have an impact on business growth and job creation.
In 2014, Governor Hogan became the first Maryland governor in over 100 years to be elected from Anne Arundel County.
In 2018, the first Republican governor to win a second term in Maryland since 1954, Msa.maryland.gov shared.

| Starting Friday, bars, restaurants and other establishments in Maryland will have to close at 10 p.m. as the number of COVID-19 cases in the state continues to increase, Gov. Larry Hogan announced Tuesday afternoon. During a press conference, Hogan announced new actions to help prevent the spread of coronavirus in the state after for the second time this month, the daily case numbers have surpassed 2,000. Another change Hogan outlined: indoor capacity will also be decreased to 50% at retail businesses, organizations, religious institutions, personal services, bingo halls, bowling alleys, pool halls, skating rinks, fitness centers and social clubs, according to Baltimore.cbslocal. |
