Kate Hudson's Acting Career

One of Kate's earliest roles came in 1996 when she made her TV debut on the Fox TV series Party of Five (1994-2000). Although she only appeared in one episode titled "Spring Breaks: Part 1", this initial experience was enough to uphold her determination to develop a professional acting career of her own. Her film debut was in "Desert Blue" in 1998. However, it wasn't until 1999 that she started to attract public attention when critics lauded her brilliant portrayal of Cindy in "200 Cigarettes", even though the movie itself was a commercial disappointment. She received acclaim for supporting roles in "Gossip" and "Dr. T and the Women" which both were released in 2000.

Hudson starred in 2005's supernatural thriller "The Skeleton Key" which was met with much box office success and critical acclaim. Hudson appeared with Owen Wilson and Matt Dillion in the comedy "You, Me, and Deupree" in 2006. Hudson once again paired up with Matthew McConaughey in 2008 when they starred in "Fool's Gold," another box office smash. In 2009, Hudson starred alongside Anne Hathaway in "Bride Wars." The movie flopped amongst critics but grossed $114 million globally. Hudson was praised in reviews for her next role in the musical "Nine" alongside Daniel-Day Lewis. Hudson's career took a turn towards more independent roles throughout the 2010s. She played the wife of a West Texas serial killer when she starred with Casey Affleck in "The Killer Inside Me", which premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival to solid reviews. She also starred in small films "A Little Bit of Heaven" and "Something Borrowed."

In 2012, Kate landed the recurring role of Cassandra July on the Fox teen comedy series "Glee." Her next film was a political thriller, "The Reluctant Fundamentalist" in 2013. Hudson subsequently starred in "Wish I was Here," "Good People," and "Rock the Kasbah" alongside Bill Murray. Hudson voiced a panda in the DreamWorks Animation "Kung Fu Panda 3" in 2016. The film became her most widely seen role and grossed $521 million globally. The same year, she starred in "Mother's Day" and played the wife of Mark Wahlberg's character in the drama "Deepwater Horizon." The film opened to positive reviews and modest financial success. In 2017, Hudson starred in "Marshall". Her appearance received positive reviews from critics but was met with a limited theatrical audience. Kate is slated to star in the 2020 film "Music" directed by Sia.

2001 "Almost Famous" and Hudson's Golden Globe

It was her performance in Cameron Crowe's 2001 film "Almost Famous" that proved she was set to follow in her mother's footsteps in taking the film industry by storm. Hudson played Penny Lane, a devoted groupie to the fictional band Stillwater.

Hudson began the year 2000 somewhat inauspiciously, with a supporting turn as a virginal college student in the unimpressive teen thriller Gossip. By year's end, however, she had charmed her way into the hearts of moviegoers and critics with her breakthrough performance as Penny Lane, the leader of a group of girls, or so-called "Band-Aids," who worship at the altar of 1970s rock & roll as imagined by writer-director Cameron Crowe in his autobiographical film Almost Famous. Originally cast in a smaller role, Hudson won a lead role after another young actress, Sarah Polley (The Sweet Hereafter, Go) dropped out.

As Penny, the sometime lover of Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup) — lead guitarist in the rock band Stillwater — and the object of affection for Crowe's own alter ego — the budding rock journalist William Miller (Patrick Fugit) — Hudson was in many ways the emotional center of the film. Her glowing performance earned her a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Hudson's complicated Relationship with Her Absent Father

Kate, along with her mother, the great Goldie Hawn, and her daughter, Rani, has been voted as People's "Most Beautiful". That's three generations of gorgeous women...

While Kate is known for her relationship with her mother and step-father, Kurt Russell, her connection with her biological father is far more difficult.

According to E!, Bill Hudson was deeply unhappy during his six-year marriage to famed actor Goldie Hawn, particularly because he believed she was unfaithful. During their marriage, Bill was around their son Oliver (star of Nashville) and daughter, Kate. But that was only the first few years of the kids' lives.

On The Howard Stern Show, Kate Hudson claimed that she has forgiven her biological father for being absent from her life. Even as a child, Kate knew that her father's absence had nothing to do with her. It had to do with issues that he was going through. Kate acknowledges publically that it must have been very painful for Bill.

Still, Kate has practically nothing to do with him.

Raising three children with three their different dads

She recently opened up about her complex family dynamics, including with her own mom, Goldie Hawn, in a conversation with TODAY's Willie Geist, aired Sunday.

"I've got multiple dads, I've got kids all over the place," she said, laughing.

The "How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days" star, 41, shares son Ryder, 17, with ex-husband Chris Robinson, and son Bingham, 9, with ex-fiancé Matt Bellamy. She also welcomed a daughter, Rani Rose, with boyfriend Danny Fujikawa in 2018.

"The only expectations I really have that are really high on my life is with my kids and with family stuff," she continued to Willie. "Other than that, it's like, I just let it go. ... I work my a-- off, and then I walk away, and I hope for the best."

But Hudson's also found staying at home with her family due to the COVID-19 epidemic challenging at times.

"I wanna be, like, 'Yeah, it's so great and ... we're figuring out,' but the reality is that there are days that are great, and there's days that I have to remind myself to be grateful," the Fabletics co-founder explained. "I never thought in a million years that I'd spend a year in one place. And when you have so many kids, sometimes you have those moments where you're hiding in your bathroom going, 'Please, please, get me out of here!'"

Hudson's other businesses

In July 2013, Kate and two partners founded a subscription athleisure company called Fabletics. Over time the company would eventually grow from being primarily e-commerce based, to operating 22 retail stores. They also operate a menswear line under the label FL2. According to a 2017 Forbes article, the company was at one point valued at $250 million. It's believed that Kate owns 20% of the company as of November 2018. Assuming the $250 million valuations have held, Kate's pre-tax stake would be worth $50 million.

The actress became a New York Times best-selling author with the 2016 publication of her inspirational book Pretty Happy: Healthy Ways to Love Your Body. She followed in 2017 with Pretty Fun: Creating and Celebrating a Lifetime of Tradition, said Celebrity Network.
