Who is Henry McMaster?
According to the South Carolina State House and Lieutenant Governor's websites, Henry Dargan McMaster was born on May 27, 1947, in Columbia. He is the son of the late attorney and former State Representative John Gregg McMaster and the late Ida Dargan McMaster.
McMaster was a graduate of the University of South Carolina in 1969, receiving his Bachelor of Arts in History. He went on to receive a Juris Doctor degree in 1973 at USC's School of Law, where he served on the Law Review.
Early life and education of Henry McMaster
McMaster was born on May 27, 1947, in Columbia, South Carolina. He is the eldest son of John Gregg and Ida Dargan (Pet), McMaster. He received a bachelor's degree in history from the University of South Carolina in 1969. As an undergraduate, he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order and the South Carolina Student Legislature. In 1973, he graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he served on the editorial board of the South Carolina Law Review. Later that year, he was admitted to the Richland County Bar Association of the South Carolina Bar. He served in the United States Army Reserves, receiving an honourable discharge in 1975.
Upon graduation from law school, McMaster worked as a legislative assistant to U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond in Washington, D.C. until 1974, when he joined the firm of Tompkins and McMaster. He was admitted to practice before the Federal Court of Claims in 1974, before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in 1975, and upon Thurmond's motion, before the Supreme Court of the United States in 1978. McMaster practised law for almost 29 years, both as a federal prosecutor and in private practice, representing clients in the state and federal courts, trial and appellate.

Governor of South Carolina (2017 - Present)
|McMaster was sworn in as governor of South Carolina on January 24, 2017, minutes after former Governor Nikki Haley's confirmation vote as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. He will serve out the remainder of Haley's term, which expires in January 2019.|
Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina (2015-2017)
McMaster was first elected lieutenant governor in 2014 and was inaugurated the following January for a four-year term in office.
Attorney General of South Carolina (2003-2011)
McMaster was first elected to the attorney general position in 2002 and won a second term in 2006. He opted not to seek re-election in 2010 in order to pursue a bid for governor, which was not successful. He left office when his second term expired in January 2011.
