Gregory Wayne Abbott, an American lawyer who was born on November 13, 1957, has been the 48th and current governor of Texas since 2015. He was a Republican who previously held the office of Texas' 50th attorney general from 2002 to 2015. He is the third governor of a U.S. state to use a wheelchair on a daily basis.

Since Reconstruction, Abbott was the second Republican to hold the position of Attorney General of Texas. "I go into the office in the morning, I sue Barack Obama, and then I go home," Abbott said when describing his role as Attorney General during Obama's presidency. He served as a justice of the Texas Supreme Court before being elected attorney general. He was first appointed to that position by former governor George W. Bush in 1995.

Early Life and Education

Greg Abbott was born on November 13, 1957, to Doris Lechristia, a housewife, and Calvin Roger Abbott, a stockbroker. Despite being from Wichita Falls, Abbott spent the majority of his early years in Longview and Duncanville. According to Biography Tree, Abbott attended Duncanville High School there and graduated with honors in the late 1970s.

Greg Abbott enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin to study finance as an undergraduate. Abbot enrolled at Vanderbilt University after receiving his finance degree to continue his education. He eventually earned his J.D. in 1984.

In 1996, Abbott defeated the libertarian John Hawley with 84% of the vote, and in 1998, he defeated the Democrat David Os with 60% of the vote. When Greg Abbott made the decision to seek for the open position of Texas Attorney General in 2002, he ascended another step in his legal career. Kirk Watson, a Democrat, was his opponent in the election, which he won with 57% of the vote. He assumed office on December 2, 2002. Abbott requested reelection as his first four-year term came to an end. With 60% of the vote, he defeated Democrat David Van Os in the election.
