Anchorage’s Emma Broyles, representing the state of Alaska, was crowned Miss America at an event Thursday marking the competition’s 100th anniversary. She’s the first Miss Alaska to win the Miss America competition in the event’s 100-year history.

Broyles emerged as the winner Thursday out of 51 contestants representing the 50 states and the District of Columbia at the competition at a Connecticut casino. Broyles, 20, claimed the centennial crown and a $100,000 college scholarship for her victory.

The top 10 contestants were: New York, Alaska, Illinois, Massachusetts, Oregon, Alabama, District of Columbia, Florida, Utah and Texas.

Alaskans across the state celebrated the news, posting messages on social media congratulating Broyles.

In the competition’s final round, she was asked what she would do if a male representative of a major sponsor made inappropriate comments or sexual advances toward her.

“I know in my heart that as a woman, I am never going to let somebody treat me like (that), because women should never be treated like objects,” Broyles said, according to USA Today. “Women can be angry! We cannot be content with things that are happening.”

The Miss America pageant competition was previously cancelled back in 2020 due to Covid-19.

Her mother is a special education teacher at Service High School in Anchorage, the same school Broyles attended.
