Months after The Voice blind auditions aired on NBC, the show has just crowned its season 19 winner — and this year, it's 15-year-old Carter Rubin of Team Gwen who came out on top.

Carter comes from a musical family, although the singing skipped a generation. His grandfather Ric Mango was a guitarist and backup vocalist for the band Jay and the Americans in the 1960s. “I think I got the singing gene from him,” Carter said.
Carter told Newsday that he auditioned for America’s Got Talent when he was 11 or 12 years old, but didn’t get through. He didn’t let that stop him from pursuing music, though. He’s continued to perform at local events in New York.
Carter once said kids at school have picked on him for being different. “Being a 14-year-old boy in middle school-slash-high school that sings, not very athletic… most boys my age their voices have already dropped down,” Carter said. “So I have been picked on by other kids for being this different, unique individual.”
“As I get older, I realize being unique isn’t a bad thing,” he continued, adding that he doesn’t need those people’s “validation”, Talen Recap quoted the teenager.

Carter's journey in The Voice US
Carter was only 14 years old when he auditioned, and he’s been wowing the coaches throughout the competition. Carter began his journey on The Voice singing “Before You Go” by Lewis Capaldi for his Blind Audition. He continued his successful run on the singing competition with “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” in the Battle Rounds; “You Say” in the Knockout Rounds; “Hero” in the Live Playoffs; and “Rainbow Connection,” which Gwen selected for him, for the semifinals. That semifinals performance helped him land his spot in the finale, where he sang “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus and the original “Up From Here.”
Carter ended up scoring the most votes from American viewers after the singer gave two moving finale performances of "The Climb" and "Up From Here". In order to win the competition, Carter had to beat out his fellow equally gifted finalists Desz (from Team Kelly), John Holiday (from Team Legend), Jim Ranger (from Team Blake), and Ian Flanigan (from Team Blake), who all gave stunning performances this past Monday night, said Good House Keeping.
The very first time Carter walked on stage, both John Legend and Gwen Stefani knew he had star potential. In his blind audition, Carter ultimately picked Gwen as his mentor after both coaches begged him to join their teams. From then on, Gwen continued to pick Carter to advance in the battle and knockout rounds.

The winner's already planned for his first album
Earlier in the season, Carter spoke with reporters about his time on the show and his future musical plans, saying his experience on The Voice has been "the time of my life" and he already felt like a winner.
Though he was the season's youngest finalist, Carter is already making big plans for his future, writing songs and looking forward to getting in the recording booth and performing concerts for his growing legion of fans. As for an upcoming album, he said he hopes to emulate male singer-songwriters who have seen success on the pop charts in recent years, naming Lewis Capaldi, Harry Styles, Ed Sheeran, and Shawn Mendes as some of the artists he admires.
"I love the music they put out there, and they've definitely inspired some of my songwriting," Carter said. "I want to go in the studio, record that, and put it out for people to hear", Parade quoted.
The Voice US 2020 - Special season on the face of COVID-19 Coach Blake Shelton called this season "special" because there were doubts over whether the NBC competition could continue amid the coronavirus pandemic. "Just a few months ago, we weren’t even sure we were going to be able to have a season," Shelton said. "And now to see that we’ve been able to do this thing. I don’t feel like we’ve missed anything, outside of the studio audience." The Voice will return for season 20 in 2021 on NBC. Until the show returns next year (likely in February), Carter will be the show's reigning champion. |
