The hours that stock exchanges are open for business and reflect an exchange's geographic location are known as US Stock Market opening times. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq, both of which have their main offices in New York, are two components of the US Stock Market. The opening and closing hours as well as the US Market holidays for every year are provided by Knowinsiders.com.

When does the US stock market open?

On weekdays (aside from stock market holidays), the regular trading hours for the U.S. stock market, which includes the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq Stock Market (Nasdaq), are 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern time. Regular stock trading ends at 1 p.m. ET on early-closure days, which are typically the day before or the day after a market holiday.

Having said that, trading can still take place after regular market hours.

For instance, "pre-market" trading occurs on days when there is a regular session; while the hours vary, it can start as early as 4 a.m. and last until the market opens at 9:30 a.m. Additionally, there are "after-hours" sessions, which usually last from 4 to 8 p.m.

These transactions, which do not involve a middleman, are carried out on "electronic communications networks," or ECNs. Once only available to large institutional buyers, this type of trading is now made possible by brokers like Fidelity and Charles Schwab.

Regarding the weekends: Saturdays and Sundays do not have regular stock trading hours. However, the majority of futures contracts (including equity futures, as well as oil, agricultural products, commodities, and other investments) start trading at 6 p.m. Eastern time on Sundays, which explains why you might see a headline on a Sunday night stating that stock futures are down.

Opening and closing times of US stock exchanges

There are two stock exchanges located in the US: the NYSE and the NASDAQ. Both follow the same opening times, which you can see listed in the table below.

Standard opening hours (UK time) Standard opening hours (New York time) IG’s trading hours on All Sessions US equities (UK time)
New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) 2.30 pm - 9 pm Monday to Friday 9.30 am - 4 pm Monday to Friday 9 am - 1 am (UK time) from Monday to Thursday
NASDAQ 2.30pm - 9pm Monday to Friday 9.30am - 4pm Monday to Friday 9am - 10pm (UK time) on Friday

Standard opening hours (UK time) Standard opening hours (New York time) IG’s trading hours on All Sessions US equities (UK time)
NYSE 2.30 pm - 9 pm Monday to Friday 9.30 am - 4 pm Monday to Friday 9 am - 1 am (UK time) from Monday to Thursday
NASDAQ 2.30pm - 9pm Monday to Friday 9.30am - 4pm Monday to Friday 9am - 10pm (UK time) on Friday

A stock index will typically only be available when the relevant exchanges are open since it is a calculation of the price changes of a group of shares. The Dow Jones, S&P 500, and NASDAQ 100 stock indices all trade at the same times as the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq.

The NASDAQ 100 is made up only of stocks listed on the NASDAQ, while the S&P 500 and Dow Jones track the prices of stocks listed on both the NYSE and the NASDAQ.

However, the majority of index trading is based on the prices of futures contracts, which are today's prices for a trade at a specific future date. On futures exchanges, which typically keep longer hours than stock exchanges, these contracts are bought and sold.

When an index price is quoted outside of the exchange's regular business hours, it is frequently its futures price. You can trade US stock indices with IG from 11 p.m. Sunday through 10 p.m. Friday (UK time), 24 hours a day. Our prices are based on futures and the activity in related markets outside of business hours.

You can choose whether to trade at the live price (referred to as the spot price) or the futures price when purchasing and selling indices through IG. If you want to hedging a position from the week, you can also buy and sell indices on the weekend.

Does the US Stock Market close for lunch?

The NYSE and the NASDAQ do not take a lunch break, in contrast to many other stock exchanges around the world, particularly those in Asia. Therefore, trading occurs continuously between the opening bell at 9.30 am and the closing bell at 4 pm.

The majority of brokers and trading platforms adhere to each exchange's opening hours. Therefore, if you wanted to buy and sell US shares in the UK, you would typically only be able to do so from Monday through Friday from 2.30 pm to 9 pm (UK time).

However, IG offers extended trading hours on more than 70 US shares, allowing you to trade from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. (UK time) Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. (UK time) on Friday. Additionally, you'll benefit from low fees, including a 0.5% FX conversion fee and a $0 commission on US shares.

After-hours stock trading on US shares

The NYSE and NASDAQ both permit after-hours trading until 8 pm (New York time) in addition to their regular hours of 9.30 am to 4 pm. Pre-market sessions are also available from 4 am to 9.30 am (New York time). During these times, orders are carried out using electronic communication networks (ECNs), a technology that automatically matches buyers and sellers.

The largest and second-largest exchanges in the world are the NYSE and the NASDAQ, respectively. They are able to serve the large number of trades they encounter each day thanks to their extended hours.

Pre-market and after-hours periods, on the other hand, frequently experience a decline in volume from regular hours. As a result, liquidity is reduced, and volatility may rise, potentially raising risk.

How do stock exchange trading hours work in the US?

Pre-market, regular, and after-hours sessions make up the US stock exchange trading hours. In New York time, pre-market hours are from 4 am to 9.30 am, regular hours are from 9.30 am to 4 pm, and after-hours are from 4 pm to 8 pm. Therefore, stocks can be bought and sold 24 hours a day.

However, the NYSE's trading floor is only accessible during the regular session. ECNs are used to facilitate pre-market and after-hours orders by automatically matching buyers and sellers. The order fulfillment process for the NASDAQ is computerized during every session, so there is no trading floor.

Despite the expansion of after-hours trading, the majority of volume on the NYSE and NASDAQ still happens during regular trading hours.
