When Mark Zuckerberg was 19 and a student at Harvard University, he wanted to find a way for his fellow Harvard colleagues to connect with each other. So in February 2004, Zuckerberg introduced Facebook (www.facebook.com) and a new era of networking began.
What is Facebook?
Facebook is a social networking site that makes it easy for you to connect and share with family and friends online. Originally designed for college students, Facebook was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg while he was enrolled at Harvard University. By 2006, anyone over the age of 13 with a valid email address could join Facebook, Gcfglobal defined.
How many Facebook users worldwide?
Since its inception in February 2004, Facebook has grown significantly, and it now has more than 60 million active users. According to Facebook’s statistics page, the number of active users has doubled every 6 months, with 250,000 new users joining each day since January 2007 for an average of 3% growth per week. According to internet-ranking company comScore, Facebook is the sixth-most trafficked site in the U.S., with the average user spending 20 minutes a day actively using Facebook by uploading photos, sending messages, or even having discussions within a group. The highly coveted demographic (from 18 to 25 years old) is 52% of Facebook’s userbase, averaging 30 to 45 minutes each day on the site.
| Why Facebook remains social media dominant? Uploading photos is a cinch thanks to Facebook’s easy-to-use interface. The browser-based program shows a grid of thumbnail-sized pictures while the user clicks a checkbox on the photos he or she wants to upload. According to ComScore, Facebook is the No. 1 photo-sharing application on the web, with more than 14 million photos uploaded daily. In comparison, Flickr, the No. 2 photo-sharing application, averages 3 million to 5 million uploads a day. Certain people join Facebook just to have their own place to upload photos so they can share them with friends and family. Forbes explained that Facebook has succeeded by adding one important ingredient, expertly handled by its founder, Mark Zuckerberg: Public Relations. This has been particularly important to the success of a social network serving 2.2 billion active monthly users (as of January 2018) and especially in light of the maniacal focus on an advertising-depended business model based on mining users’ data, content and actions. Like other social networks, Facebook has found itself facing user revolt, time and again, when it changed its features and policies and when yet another revelation about its disregard for users’ privacy has emerged. One such example is recounted by David Kirkpatrick in The Facebook Effect. In February 2009, Facebook changed its “terms of use.” The essence of the change was captured by the title of an article in Consumerist: “Facebook's New Terms Of Service: ‘We Can Do Anything We Want With Your Content. Forever.’” Zuckerberg answered the ensuing fire-storm with a post titled “On Facebook, People Own and Control their Information,” in which he said “In reality, we wouldn't share your information in a way you wouldn't want.” |

Facebook offers an official mobile app on a variety of smartphones and tablets, including iOS and Android. You can use the mobile app to do just about everything you can do in the desktop version of Facebook: post status updates and pictures, read stories and updates, and chat with friends.
We'd like to give you a quick overview of the two most popular versions of the Facebook app: Facebook for Android and Facebook for iPhone. While the interface for these apps is somewhat different, you'll notice that each app gives you access to the same basic features.

Creating a Facebook account
Before you can use Facebook, you must create an account. Creating a Facebook account is free. All you need to get started is an email address and a few minutes of your time.
Signing Up for a Facebook Account
To sign up for a Facebook account, follow these three easy steps.
- Visit Facebook’s website.
- On the homepage, fill out your first name, last name, mobile number or email, password, birthday, and gender.
- Press "Sign Up".
Setting Up Your Privacy Settings
After you’ve signed up for a Facebook account, you can adjust your privacy settings to control who can see your profile and information. Follow these four simple steps to change your privacy settings.
- Click on the downward pointing arrow that’s located on the top right corner of any Facebook page.
- Click “Settings”.
- In the left sidebar, press “Privacy”.
- Set who is allowed to see your past and future posts. You can also control how people can find and contact you.
Personalizing Your Profile
Odds are, there’s probably someone on Facebook who has the same name as you. To differentiate yourself from these people and help your friends and family find you on Facebook, personalize your profile by adding a profile picture, cover photo, and some personal information.
Picking a Profile Picture
- Go to your profile and click on your profile picture.
- To pick your profile picture, choose a photo that you’re already tagged in on Facebook, one that you’ve uploaded to Facebook, or a photo from your computer. You can also add a frame to your profile picture.
Choosing a Cover Photo
- Click the camera button on your cover photo, which is on your profile.
- To choose your cover photo, you can pick a photo from your Facebook profile, a selection of Facebook’s own cover artwork, create a collage, or upload a photo from your computer. You can also reposition or delete your current cover photo.
Updating Your Profile
- Click the “About” section on your profile page.
- In this section, you can fill in information about your work and education, the places you’ve lived, contact and basic info, family and relationships, details about you, and life events.
Adding Friends on FacebookThere are three ways you can add friends on Facebook. You can either search for them, find them in the "Find Friends" tab, or import a list of contacts from your email, iCloud, or phone. To find friends on Facebook, go to your profile, press the "Friends" tab, and click the "Find Friends" button. You’ll see a list of friend requests from other people and a list of people you may know that you can add as a friend on Facebook. If you upload a list of contacts onto Facebook, you can add your friends as you sort through each of your contacts. |

To share a Facebook status, go to the text box at the top of your news feed page or on your profile page. With status updates, you can share text with 15 different colored backgrounds, photos, videos, GIFs, stickers, and links.
You can also share other types of posts, like:
Feeling/Activity: share how you’re currently feeling or what you’re currently doing.
Check-in: when you visit a city, location, or place, check-in, and let your friends know where you’re at.
Tag Friends: if you’re hanging out with your friends, tag them in your status and share what you’re doing.
Poll: ask your Facebook friends what their opinion is on a certain topic.
Answer a Question: choose a predetermined question to answer or create your own question to answer and share it with your Facebook friends.
Lists: choose a predetermined topic to make a list for or create your own topic and share it with your Facebook friends.
Facebook Stories: all the content that you can share through a status update is shareable through your Facebook story. You can also upload content to your stories by clicking the Add to Your Story button on the right sidebar.
Facebook Live
To do a live broadcast on your Facebook account, follow these three simple steps.
- In the box that says “What’s on your mind?”, press “Live Video”.
- Once you press “Live Video”, you can write a description about your broadcast, tag people in it, add a feeling or activity, check in to an event, support a non-profit, or add a poll. You can also title your live broadcast or tag a video game if you’re live streaming someone or yourself playing a video game.
- Press “Go Live” when you’ve finished describing your live broadcast.
Connecting With Friends

On your news feed, you’ll see updates from your friends, family, or public pages you follow. To interact with them, you can like and react to their posts, share content on their timelines, and communicate with them through text or video chat.
If you like someone's post, give them a thumbs up, comment on their post, or share it.
If your Facebook friend’s post evokes a stronger reaction in you than a like, you can also express that you love, laughed, are amazed, sad, or angry at their post by holding down the “Like” button.
Facebook PrivacyFacebook allows users to control their thumbnail views, which is shown when another user searches based on name or keyword. Everyone can use Facebook’s privacy settings to control who can see his or her full profile. If a user is in a network and another person’s profile is public, he or she can click on the thumbnail picture to view the profile. Likewise, if the profile options are set to private, the user must be “friends” with the second party to view the profile. There is also an option to show only a limited profile, which is user-defined by the privacy settings. |
