What are the best options to watch the BBC iPlayer from France?
Make no mistake, France produces some world class television. But, as we all know, there are times where we'd like to tune in to some British television when overseas. Whether that be the live stream of BBC News programmes in the evening, deep-diving into the latest dramas as soon as they air, or even being able to switch to children's TV programs like CBeebies or CBBC, having the chance to watch iPlayer when the need arises is what's most important. Below are some of the options for streaming BBC and British television in France.
Option 1: Purchase a VPN (Virtual Private Network)
VPNs have become popular with those wanting to access the many different streaming platforms. A VPN is a software tool that will, in theory, be able to trick the ITV servers into believing that you are based in the United Kingdom and, thus, giving you full access to the BBC iPlayer catch-up service.
Choosing the right VPN is crucial to avoid wasting both time and money. It goes without saying that the best VPNs are definitely worth the premium price tag–avoid the free VPNs at all costs!
A VPN might not be the best option for those who are not tech savvy since a little technical knowledge is needed when utilising a VPN. It should also be considered that a VPN will slowdown your internet service.
Option 2: Use a BBC Proxy Server
A proxy server hogs less resources than a VPN and they are generally cheaper to install. However, finding a reliable and stable server to watch the BBC iPlayer from France or other countries is a little tricky–you may be overwhelmed by a web search unless you know exactly what you are looking for.
Option 3: Beebs Google Chrome Extension
It is ironic that if the BBC iPlayer was a paid for service, like the ITV Hub+ then under EU law it would have to be available to any British citizen living, working or travelling in France. However, the BBC iPlayer is free in the UK (putting aside licence arguments) and therefore is unavailable to anyone without a UK IP address.
Chrome extensions are basically little programmes that add new features to your browser. Many people use Adblock and Adblock Plus extensions and hardly notice them working away in the background. Once installed, you click on the extension icon and are connected to a server located in the UK and are able to easily view iPlayer or other UK geoblocked channels.
Search the Chrome Web Store if you like but we at Beebs think we have the best iPlayer solution right here. Lightweight, fast and reliable. Be on the BBC iPlayer in France in a couple of clicks.

Watch The Serpent on BBC iPlayer
True crime dramas are becoming a staple on the BBC iPlayer catch-up service, and it's hard to look past the The Serpent. This BBC and Netflix co-production is inspired by real events and is focused on the story of serial conman Charles Sobhraj (Golden Globe nominee Tahar Rahim) and the remarkable attempts to bring him to justice.
All eight episodes have been made available to stream The Serpent on BBC iPlayer.
BBC iPlayer and Tokyo Olympics 2021
The BBC has revealed its coverage plan for the Tokyo 2021 Olympics.
There will be over 350 hours of network TV coverage of the Games, with a live stream available on BBC iPlayer and the Red Button. A new virtual reality studio at dock10 in Salford will provide the home of the action, and the trailer for its coverage is set to debut during the England v Germany Euro 2020 clash on 29 June.
Michael Johnson, Chris Hoy, Jessica Ennis-Hill, Katherine Grainger, Nicola Adams, Rebecca Adlington, Victoria Pendleton and many more join the presenting team, with Gabby Logan, Clare Balding, Hazel Irvine, Dan Walker, Jason Mohammad, Alex Scott, JJ Chalmers and Sam Quek fronting BBC1’s coverage. Meanwhile Jeanette Kwakye and Nihal Arthanayake will host an extra highlights show daily on BBC Two. Mark Chapman, Rachel Burden, Kelly Cates and JJ Chalmers will lead the radio coverage on 5 Live.
The Games will officially begin on BBC1 at 11am on Friday 23 July, with Clare Balding and Alex Scott hosting the Opening Ceremony. There will be commentary from Hazel Irvine and Andrew Cotter. Team GB’s opening match against Chile in the women’s football will also be shown live on BBC Two from 8.15am on Wednesday 21 July, hosted by Alex Scott.
From there, each day throughout the games on BBC1, JJ Chalmers will host from midnight –5am, followed by Dan Walker and Sam Quek co-hosting a special edition of BBC Breakfast from 5 –9am with the best of the overnight action as well as plenty of live sport in addition to the regular national and regional news updates. Hazel Irvine and Gabby Logan will co-host daily from 9am –3pm, followed by Jason Mohammad from 3 –6pm. Clare Balding and Alex Scott will then bring each day to a close on BBC One from 7.30 –9pm with Today At The Games.
BBC2 will then continue the action with Olympics Extra from 9-10pm, showing in-depth highlights from some of the key sports of the day hosted by Jeanette Kwakye and Nihal Arthanayake. BBC iPlayer will show all coverage live and on-demand, as well as special highlights programmes - that will also be hosted on the BBC Sport website.
The Games will be wrapped up by a review of the Games at 11am on Sunday 8 August on BBC1 ahead of live coverage of the Closing Ceremony, hosted again by Alex Scott and Clare Balding, with commentary from Hazel Irvine and Andrew Cotter.
Which channel will the Olympics be on? There will be live coverage on BBC One every day, starting at midnight and normally running until around 9pm. BBC Two will then show a daily highlights show from 9-10pm. If you want to watch a sport that isn’t currently showing on BBC One you can stream various options on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website. Eurosport is also showing the Games, but it costs £6.99 a month for a subscription. Tokyo is eight hours ahead of the UK, meaning some events will be at quite unsociable hours. Who are the BBC presenters? JJ Chalmers will host the graveyard slot for the extra keen viewers, from midnight until 5am. Dan Walker and former hockey star Sam Quek will provide coverage on BBC Breakfast from 5-9am. Hazel Irvine and Gabby Logan will host from 9am-3pm, with Jason Mohammad running the ship until 6pm. Clare Balding and Alex Scott have the primetime slot, from 7.30-9pm. |
BBC iPlayer account When you register for a BBC account (which is free) you'll need to give your date of birth, gender, and email address, along with a valid UK postcode. The BBC says that the aim of the account isn't to pursue iPlayer users who haven't paid for a TV Licence, but admitted that it will cross-reference the email addresses with people who've previously claimed not to need a licence. If you're a British resident with a paid-up licence fee, simply sign into your BBC account and use a VPN service as described above. You're still breaking the Ts and Cs by watching via a VPN, just like anyone abroad who signs up with a fake UK address. |
