Even before quarantining was de rigueur, many people preferred to celebrate Valentine's Day indoors to avoid the hustle and bustle of the holiday. Now, although we may be limited as to where we can go out, there have never been more fun date options for staying in. The trick, whether planning a date or being in a relationship, is to really commit to it. Go all out with the decor, outfits, and food, whatever your date's theme may be. Below, we share 10 ideas for a memorable Valentine's Day at the office (and most of them can be adapted as an equally fun treat with friends).

1. Host Valentine's Day Bake Off

Have everyone in the office (or those who are interested in participating and who have signed up) bake a dessert to bring in on Valentine's Day. Someone takes the cupcakes. Another person takes the classic chocolate chip cookies. And another coworker decides to take on the two-tiered cake filled with strawberry cream. Set up the office kitchen or lounge area with all of the desserts, and either leave them out for eating all day or host a get-together at lunch or around a happy hour to have everyone enjoy them together. Then have employees vote on the best-baked good. The winner should get a reward like a gift card for coffee, an expensive lunch or the promise of all the leftovers, Fairy God Boss cites.

2. Decorate the Office with Valentine's Day Decor

Decorate the office with Valentine's Day decor like heart-shaped balloons, "Happy Valentine's Day" streamers and roses on the desks in all of the conference rooms. You can even host a competition for the best-decorated cubicle to get more employees excited about it and involved. After all, it won't quite feel like Valentine's Day at work if the office space isn't red- and pink-washed.

3. Have a Valentine's Day-Themed Happy Hour

If you have the space for it, and the company allows booze, host a happy hour right there at the office with a DIY bar in the kitchen or lounge area. Have an actual bartender or proclaimed bartender (you know, that guy in sales who randomly runs a mixology blog in his spare time...) make Valentine's Day-inspired cocktails like a Love Potion drink or anything using rose petals for decoration. If it's impossible to host a happy hour in the actual office, you can also just round up the troops to head to a local watering hole post work in light of the holiday. Just make sure you make reservations if you have a big crew, as the bars and restaurants will be quite crowded after work hours on Valentine's Day.

4. Spread Love in the Community

Schedule a group activity to craft Valentine’s Day cards with heartfelt messages for those who may need a little extra love this special day. Reaching out to a local retirement community, hospital, or military office can help spread the love within the community.

If you like the idea of sharing valentines within the office, be sure to make a few extra for unexpected clients or visitors (such as the local mailman or delivery driver) who may stop in throughout the day. This act of kindness is a gesture of appreciation.

5. Express Gratitude for your Work Team

Expressing gratitude to your work team is extremely important; however, it doesn’t happen as frequently as it should. In fact, according to a recent Gallup workplace survey, only one in three workers in the U.S. strongly agree that they received recognition or praise for doing good work in the past seven days.

Increase workplace engagement and spirit with a simple compliment or act of praise. This can be done in person, by writing a letter, or through a random act of kindness.

This year, make Valentine’s Day a team-building day. Show love to your community, schedule fun activities, and inspire employees to look at it as more than just a day of love, but a day of kindness and joy, according to Apex Facility.

6. Bring in Breakfast Made with Love

Have anyone in the office who is willing to participate to make or pick up breakfast food and bring it in for the whole team to enjoy on Valentine's Day. Perhaps someone tackles enough scrambled eggs to feed the whole office, while another person whips up their signature French toast. And you can't forget the person in charge of the extra-crispy bacon. Anyone who can't cook, or who doesn't have the time to cook breakfast, can also pick up pastries, fruit bowls or juices, as well as other necessities like napkins and plates if the office isn't already stocked with them.

7. Valentine’s Themed Lunch

Schedule an hour for your team to leave their desks and enjoy conversation and food. Pass around a signup sheet in advance and ask officemates to bring in themed food like heart-shaped treats or red/pink-colored goodies, notes Time Communications.

8. Secret Cupid

This game is similar to Secret Santa exchanges. Have every employee who wants to participate pick a colleague’s name randomly out of a basket. They keep this name a secret! On Valentine’s Day, employees leave little gifts for who they chose on their desk or in the mailbox.

9. Have Valentine’s Day Themed Activities

Create a playful, relaxed atmosphere with a few themed games or activities. Encourage employees to participate in a “Red Elephant” exchange with only red items. Or fill a container with red Hershey kisses and ask employees to guess how many kisses there are. Award the winner with the “Kisses Jar” and a pair of movie tickets.

Playing a few games between meetings will break up daily routines and won’t go unnoticed by employees – a win for both parties. Go ahead, play on! (Remember, when in doubt, about games or activities – check with your H.R. department.)

10. Dress up (or Down) for the Special Occasion

If your office is a casual one, have everyone dress up for Valentine's Day. Perhaps the dress code includes red dresses and bowties for the day. On the other hand, if your office is already a place where people dress up, allow employees to wear jeans to work or dress down in some capacity — the point is to acknowledge that it's a special day all about appreciating love and life, and part of that means to get excited and/or relax.
