If you’re a lover of water fights and good old-fashioned fun, you’ll love Songkran! A three-day festival to celebrate the Thai new year, this time was traditionally about cleaning out and starting the new year afresh.

These days, barrels of water line the streets and everyone is armed with water balloons and water guns to playfully attack with! Whether you’re a friend or a stranger, there’s no escape from the water wars on the streets of Thailand!

2. Cherry blossom season - Japan (Across April)

The arrival of the cherry blossoms (sakura) in Japan is symbolic of the new season and a new lease of life. No one quite knows when those pesky blossoms will decide to appear, but when they do, Japanese friends and families gather under the beautiful trees (hanimi) and celebrate with picnics and barbecues galore.

With celebrations that date back to 1678, Ouro Preto in the Minas Gerais province of Brazil draws people from far and wide each year to witness Semana Santa. Ouro Preto, which means black gold, is a former mining town and was at the centre of the Gold Rush, but now, this Catholic holy week is the main attraction, with processions, performances of religious stories and a two-mile pathway of flowers for people to walk along on their way to mass.

Can’t make it to Burning Man in Black Rock City, Nevada? No problem. AfrikaBurn is South Africa’s version of America’s Burning Man. AfrikaBurn is not a spectator event, meaning it’s all about the participants, who gather annually to create a contemporary city of art, theme camps, music, performance, and costume.

Like Burning Man, AfrikaBurn takes place in the desert, and much of the temporary art is lit on fire at the end of the festival. The festival’s aim is to be inclusive of everyone. Nothing is for sale at the event but ice, and there are no vendors, advertising or branding allowed.

6. Bisket Jatra - Nepal (10-18 April)

These celebrations for the eight-night/nine-day Nepali New Year take place mostly in Bhaktapur. Also known as the “festival after the death of the Serpent”, Bisket Jatra rituals include the slaughtering of two snakes, a game of tug of war between the upper and lower town residents and a massive chariot procession with a statue of the god Bhairava, Blog Musement cited.

7. Snowbombing Festival - Mayrhofen, Austria (13-18 April)

Snowbombing is one of Europe’s leading music festivals, which takes place at a ski resort sitting at 8,497 feet. Heading into its 19th year, the festival is referred to as the world’s greatest show on snow.

Over 100 artists will perform in unique venues such as an igloo rave, an enchanted forest party, and Austria’s largest fancy dres street party. Some of Europe’s best boarders will be at the festival hitting the slopes, so keep an eye out for adrenaline sports. When not taking in the music, participants can go paragliding, snowboarding, hiking, or hop in a snow limo. The Canadian festival follows the same layout as Austria, Radseason listed.
