Top 5 best foods in Pennsylvania

The food that Pennsylvania is known for may not always be particularly unique or high-end (you could even call some of its best-known staples "street food"), but one thing's for sure, you won't find them done better anywhere else.

What is a must eat in Pennsylvania?

1. Pretzels

You haven't had a pretzel until you've had a pretzel in Pennsylvania. If you go into Philadelphia, you'll find the streets littered with food carts selling soft pretzels. The pretzel is deeply embedded in the history of the state; it has been a staple of the Pennsylvania Dutch for centuries. In fact, you'll find some of the oldest pretzel bakeries in the country in Southeast Pennsylvania.

2. Tomato Pie

Tomato pie is a Pennsylvania snack that most closely resembles a slice of pizza. Basically, it's a crust smeared with red sauce and dusted with cheese. Some of the oldest Italian bakeries in Southern Philadelphia serve tomato pie by the slice and at room temperature. For the best tomato pie in the area, head over to the Tomato Pie Cafe in Harrisburg.

3. Scrapple

If you had to name one breakfast item that was distinctly Pennsylvanian, it would be scrapple. It was first made as a way to minimize food waste by combining leftover pork trimmings with cornmeal in order to create a loaf of meat that was then sliced and fried. In our opinion, nothing goes with fried eggs quite like scrapple, and you won't find many breakfast spots in the area that don't serve it.

4. Philly Cheesesteak

No list of top Pennsylvania foods is complete without the Philly cheesesteak. The Philly cheesesteak generally consists of thinly sliced and griddle-fried beef with either American cheese, provolone or Cheez Whiz on a long roll, or hoagie, as they're called in Pennsylvania. There are some variations of the cheesesteak, with some versions adding onions and peppers to the mix. The Philly cheesesteak is such a staple throughout the state that you don't have to go far to find one. Not only do we have the Philadelphia Steak and Hoagie House in Mechanicsburg, but you don't have to drive far from town to get to Philadelphia Steaks & Hoagies or Philly Steak & Shake.

5. Roast Pork Sandwich

Although the Philly cheesesteak may hog all the sandwich glory, the Roast Pork Sandwich is arguably just as popular among Pennsylvanians. It's even garnered some national attention recently when the New York Post named the Roast Pork Sandwich at John's Roast Pork in Philadelphia as one of the best sandwiches in the country. Even though the sandwich couldn't be more simple (it's nothing more than slow roasted pork on a roll or hoagie with a few optional additions, such as cheese or peppers), the flavor packs a real wallop.

After all, food is such a huge part of what makes Pennsylvania so special. Think about it. We kick off the New Year with a scrumptious meal of pork and sauerkraut.

And, that’s after watching a giant Hershey’s kiss or mushroom drop to signal the start of a new year. We travel to Hershey to watch chocolate being made and to make our own. That’s just the beginning of PA’s rich culinary tradition.
