How many hospitals exist in the UK?
There are 1148 hospitals in the UK. This figure includes both NHS Trust-managed hospitals and additional private hospitals that are currently in operation. This data includes 930 NHS hospitals and 218 private hospitals.
Total population versus total hospitals.Because England has the largest population, we investigated the hospital per capita ratio in each region. The dark blue represents the percentage of the population in this area, whereas the light blue represents the percentage of hospitals in that area. Surprisingly, some places have greater differences in population vs. hospitals. Despite having only 11% of the overall population, the South West possesses 17% of England's hospitals. This could be due to having more smaller hospitals, more private hospitals, greater money, or other variables. Other locations have more data in common. For example, the North West accounts for 14% of England's overall population and 13% of its hospitals. In contrast, the East accounts for 12% of the overall population but only 6% of all hospitals. This highlights the need for more amenities in this area. |
