In Sarasota, Florida, there is an 839-bed healthcare institution called Sarasota Memorial Hospital (SMH). The hospital, a category II trauma center, was established in 1925. Internal medicine and emergency medicine residency training programs are run at Sarasota Memorial Hospital and are both associated with Florida State University.
In 1921, locals began to raise money for the hospital. On November 2, 1925, Sarasota Hospital opened its doors with 32 beds and basic canvas tents.
