1. 17 Again

As the film opens, Efron is a star high-school basketball player who leaves the game behind when he finds out his girlfriend is pregnant and commits to her on the spot. Twenty years later, this dynamic young man has morphed into a defeated sad-sack (Matthew Perry) who has squandered his marriage to wife Leslie Mann and alienated himself from his two teenage children. When a janitorial “spirit guide” gives him a chance to revisit his youth and realize the dreams he left behind in high school, Efron instead uses the opportunity to get his family back on track, Film Avclub noted.

2. Can’t Hardly Wait

It doesn’t get much more ’90s than ensemble teen comedy Can’t Hardly Wait, following various characters over the course of a single night as they celebrate their high school graduation. Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ethan Embry, Lauren Ambrose, Seth Green, Jason Segel, Melissa Joan Hart, and Donald Faison are among the many stars and future stars who drift in and out of the epic party and its multiple comedic storylines.

3. The Forty-Year-Old Version

Writer/director/star Radha Blank made a huge splash with her semi-autobiographical debut film The Forty-Year-Old Version, about a playwright approaching 40 who reinvents herself as a rapper. It’s bluntly funny and brutally honest about age, race, and professional ambitions, all held together by Blank’s wit and charisma.

4. Hunt for the Wilderpeople

Before becoming a big deal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his Thor movies, New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi directed the endearingly goofy comedy Hunt for the Wilderpeople. The comedy is about a sullen teenage orphan (breakout star Julian Dennison) who goes on the lam with his survivalist foster uncle (Sam Neill) when child services comes for him.

5. Mascots

Filmmaker Christopher Guest carries on the tradition of his acclaimed mockumentaries (including Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show) with Netflix original movie Mascots, about the oddball sports mascots who gather for an annual competition. The cast of comedy all-stars includes Jane Lynch, Fred Willard, Chris O’Dowd, and Guest himself, improvising witty exchanges as their absurd characters vie for glory in mascotery, according to Howtogeek.

6. Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Monty Python and the Holy Grail is possibly the best representation of the legendary British comedy troupe. The comedy puts Monty Python members Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin into the story of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. Follow along as the characters search for the Holy Grail, with plenty of sublimely ridiculous situations occurring along the way.

7. The Muppets

Jim Henson’s beloved felt creations, including Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, and many more, make their feature film return courtesy of co-star and co-writer Jason Segel in The Muppets. Segel plays a human Muppets fan who embarks on a quest to reunite the Muppets and save their theater from being demolished by an evil developer.

8. The Naked Gun

One of the landmarks of the spoof genre, The Naked Gun comes from comedy titans Jerry Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and David Zucker, who adapted their short-lived cop-show parody Police Squad! into this joke-heavy feature film. Leslie Nielsen stars as the clueless but very serious Lt. Frank Drebin, who must stop an assassination attempt against the Queen of England when the monarch visits Los Angeles.

9. The Kissing Booth

This was arguably one of the first movies in Netflix rom-com bloom that kicked off in 2018 and is still going strong. The plot is delightfully bonkers: A high school student has to face her crush head-on after she agrees to work a kissing booth at carnival. The catch? Her crush happens to be her best friend’s older brother, Glamour cited.

10. Superbad

Jonah Hill and Michael Cera star as a pair of high school misfits attempting to acquire booze and get to a cool party where they might have a chance to score with the girls they like in this hilarious and raunchy coming-of-age comedy. Co-written by Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen (who also plays a supporting role), Superbad is as much about the bonds of teenage friendship as it is about crazy antics.

11. Banana Split

Instead of fighting over the boy they’re both into, the teen-girl protagonists of Banana Split become best friends, keeping their friendship a secret from the guy who one is currently dating and the other used to date. Liana Liberato and co-writer Hannah Marks have fantastic chemistry as the main characters in a movie about how the giddy bonds of friendship transcend any kind of youthful romance.

12. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Filmmaker Edgar Wright adapts Bryan Lee O’Malley’s series of graphic novels into Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, combining comic book and video game aesthetics into an energetic, reference-heavy comedy. Michael Cera plays the title character, who must defeat the “seven evil exes” of his new girlfriend Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) in order to date her.

13. Yes, God, Yes

This is a hysterical, humble indie of divine intervention. The film from Karen Maine is a teen raunch comedy that's totally unlike other teen raunch comedies, following a high school girl as she wrestles with newfound sexual urges while on a repressive, conservative church retreat. Dyer is utterly charming in the role as a naive but defiant young woman turned off by her peers' holier than thou attitudes, and the film's setting in the early '00s featuring flip phones and scandalous AIM chat rooms makes it all the more laughable.

14. Stranger Than Fiction

Will Ferrell is a lot less Ron Burgundy and much more endearing in this comedy, playing your typical, monotonous I.R.S. auditor who… must defend his life to Emma Thompson, who is planning on killing him. Sort of. Centered around a Charlie Kaufman-like suspension of reality concept, Ferrell's character comes to the realization that he's the character in an author's (Thompson) latest work and she controls everything in his life, from his lunch and love life to his death. As he sets out to meet and stop her, this grim story turns out to be a surprisingly charming work about finding your way again once it seems you've lost yourself, Thrillist listed.

15. Our Idiot Brother

Who doesn't love Paul Rudd? Nobody! It's impossible not to love the hilarious, endearing everyman who's been making us laugh in small and big roles alike in comedies since the '90s. He's at the heart of this offbeat movie, playing the titular idiotic brother, Ned. This one might not be as much of a lovable surprise if Rudd didn't lead the cast as his hippie dippy character who's out on his luck after being arrested for selling weed, but he does and he brings a certain charm as he couch surfs and shakes up the lives of his sisters. Seriously, Ned and this movie aren't so idiotic after all: You'll find yourself welcoming his enlightened teachings and sense of humor.

16. My Best Friend's Wedding

In this upside-down version of a rom-com, the bitchy best friend trying to ruin the relationship of the happy couple is the star of the movie. One of the most triumphant scenes in all of film history is when Julia Roberts tries to humiliate Cameron Diaz by making her do karaoke, and instead, Diaz has the whole bar clapping and singing along. For the rest of the movie, we cheer for Diaz and the sadly boring Dermot Mulroney to live happily ever after, at first just to spite Roberts, and then because of how much their love for one another shines through.

17. Lady Bird

The dizzying, frustrating, exhilarating rite of passage that is senior year of high school is the focus of actress Greta Gerwig's first directorial effort, the story of girl named Lady Bird (her given name, in that "it’s given to me, by me") who rebels against everyday Sacramento, California life to obtain whatever it is "freedom" turns out to be. Laurie Metcalf is an understated powerhouse as Lady Bird's mother, a constant source of contention who doggedly pushes her daughter to be successful in the face of the family's dwindling economic resources. It's a tragic note in total complement to Gerwig's hysterical love letter to home, high school, and the history of ourselves.

18. Hail, Caesar!

The Coen brothers' 1950s Hollywood period piece might sound too good to be true, as it has Tilda Swinton pulling double duty as identical twins and rivaling gossip columnists; George Clooney getting kidnapped in ancient Roman garb; Scarlett Johansson enjoying a Busby Berkeley moment; Jonah Hill flexing his very strong forearms; Channing Tatum singing and dancing; and Alden Ehrenreich stealing the spotlight in goofy fashion. But it really offers a delicious swirl of genres and stories, with a little something for every kind of viewer to enjoy.
