Mass shootings in the United States are disturbingly common. In comparison with other Western countries, there are significantly more shootings in the U.S., which some theorize is due to the relatively lax gun control laws.
The right to own a firearm is guaranteed by the United States Constitution, and state laws governing gun ownership vary across the country.
With 23 total shootings since 1982, California had the most mass shootings in the country as of June 2022. According to the source, a mass shooting is one that results in the deaths of four or more people.
The frequency of mass shootings is very high in the US. Over 2,400 people were killed and over 9,000 were injured in the 2,100 mass shootings that occurred in the United States between 2013 and 2019. In light of recent events, going to school has become a nightmare for parents, teachers, and students across the country. These incidents involved shootings at schools.

1.California: 164
It's the most recent mass shooting to kill innocent children at a school in the US, according to nbclosangeles.com. California's deadliest school shootings have occurred on campuses throughout the state, according to NBC4. They were created in 1976. Here are a few of the most recent deadly ones:
Oikos University
On April 2, 2012, a person opened fire at the Christian vocational college in Oakland, California, killing six students, one employee, and injuring three more. Lydia Sim, 21, of Hayward, Sonam Choedon, 33, of El Cerrito, Grace Eunhea Kim, 23, of Union City, and Doris Chibuko, 40, of San Leandro were all residents of the East Bay. Judith Seymour, 53, of San Jose, and Tshering Rinzing Bhutia, 38, of San Francisco, were two additional victims. Katleen Ping was named as the seventh victim in the complaint. She worked at the front desk. One Goh, the shooter, passed away in prison in 2019 at the age of 50 while still on life imprisonment. Goh, according to the police, was upset with school officials for dismissing him and refusing to pay his tuition.

California State University, Fullerton
On July 12, 1976, seven people were shot and killed on the Cal State Fullerton campus. The massacre claimed the lives of custodians Donald Karges and Deborah Paulsen, photographer Paul Herzberg, audio technician Bruce Jacobsen, professor Seth Fessenden, graphic artist Frank Teplansky, and library assistant Stephen L. Becker. With 23 rounds fired during the assault, Edward Charles Allaway, who was convicted of the shooting due to insanity, is still being treated at Patton State Hospital. Two more people were hurt during the roughly five-minute attack.
Santa Monica College
On June 7, 2013, a shooter opened fire in Santa Monica, killing four people and injuring a number of others before being shot and killed by police at Santa Monica College. The gunman's father Samir Zawahri, 55, his brother Christopher Zawahri, 25, Carlos Navarro Franco, 68, Marcela Dia Franco, 26, and Margarita Gomez, 68 were among those who perished. John Zawahri, 23, was the shooter.
Cleveland Elementary School
On January 29, 1979, 16-year-old Brenda Spencer fired several rounds at students and staff on campus at Grover Cleveland Elementary School in San Carlos from her bedroom window across the street. Two adults died and eight students were injured.
Santana High School
On March 5, 2001, 15-year-old Charles Andy Williams opened fire on campus and killed two people and wounded 13 others. The gunman is serving life in state prison and is eligible for parole in 2051.
2.Texas: 135
At Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, in May 2022, an 18-year-old gunman shot and killed 19 students as well as two teachers. The local police confirmed that the alleged shooter was killed. Salvador Ramos, who is 18 years old, has been named as him. The shooter is thought to have operated alone.
According to data compiled by the Center for Homeland Defense and Security at the Naval Postgraduate School, there have been 135 school shootings in Texas since 1970.
This is the second-highest number in the nation, just behind California, which has 164.

The 1966 shooting at the University of Texas Tower, which left 18 dead, has been surpassed by the shooting at the Uvalde school as the deadliest school shooting in Texas history. According to data from the Gun Violence Archive, Texas had 129 mass shootings between 2013 and August 2019, which can be defined as an incident that results in numerous gun violence victims.
In the wake of the Santa Fe High School shooting, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a number of bills in 2019 that were aimed at improving school safety. According to wfaa.com, the bill required school districts to implement emergency operation plans that called for specific training for school resource officers and making sure district employees were prepared to handle emergencies.
The incident makes it the seventh deadliest shooting in the nation since the Columbine High School massacre in 1999, and the second deadliest shooting at an elementary, middle, or high school in American history, behind the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012.
Austin, TX: The University of Texas, 1966 — 16 dead, 31 injured
In 1966, a military-trained sniper used the observation deck of the University of Texas's main structure, known as the Tower, to shoot dozens of people.
Officers responding to the attack were forced to move slowly and frequently take cover, which resulted in the shooting lasting longer than 90 minutes. Students from Texas helped the police by trying to take out the shooter from the ground with hunting rifles, forcing him to fire through drain spouts for the majority of the attack.
Police from the area stormed the Tower and shot the shooter dead. Due to the shooter's elevated vantage point, the incident led to the formation of SWAT teams and has been compared to the Las Vegas shooting.
3.Florida: 90
Following the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, which left 17 people dead and 17 injured, Florida lawmakers passed the "Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act," which enables police to ask for someone to have their guns taken away temporarily.
Rubio also introduced it at the federal level in 2018 and has kept bringing it up ever since.
A gun violence restraining order, according to Rubio, is one of the most effective measures we can take in the wake of Parkland. "We're passing a law to try to get all the other states in the country to do the same thing so you can catch these people and take away their guns before they kill anyone," the lawmaker said.
Our Florida NBC affiliate reports that since its implementation in 2018, the Florida red flag law has been used about 6,000 times.
Kxan.com reports that a high school mass shooting occurred in Texas in 2018 as well. In that year, a teen opened fire at a high school in Santa Fe, Texas, killing 10 people.
Following this, Abbott issued a nearly 50-page report with dozens of recommendations on how to make schools safer, ranging from supporting resources for prevention to mandating fresh preparedness initiatives.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida - Feb. 14, 2018

Fourteen children and three staff members were killed after a gunman brought an AR-15 into the high school. The shooter, Nikolas Cruz, 23, a former student at the school, has pleaded guilty to 17 counts of murder. His death penalty trial is ongoing, as ABC News reported.

In 2020, there were 69 mass shootings in Illinois, up from 41 the year before. Nationally, there was a nearly 50% increase in mass shootings during this pandemic of crippling unemployment, violent protests, and idle youth.
69 mass shootings were reported in Illinois in 2020, leaving 42 dead and 301 injured. According to pjstar.com, the state's 41 mass shootings resulted in 28 fatalities and 182 injuries in 2016.
One of the deadliest shootings in Illinois last year occurred in Chicago on July 4 and resulted in four fatalities and four injuries. One shooting that left 15 injured on July 21 in Chicago was among the state's bloodiest incidents.
During an incident on Peoria's riverfront in July of last year, thirteen people were shot.
Northern Illinois University shooting, February 14, 2008
Steven Kazmierczak, 27, shot several people in a Northern Illinois University classroom with a shotgun, killing five and injuring 21, before committing suicide. Although Kazmierczak was not currently enrolled there, he had visited in the years before the attack.
A former NIU graduate student opened fire in the building's lecture hall, killing five NIU students. Almost twenty other people were hurt in addition to Catalina Garcia, 20, Daniel Parmenter, 20, Ryanne Mace, 19, Julianna Gehant, 32, and Gayle Dubowski, 20.
The university has established several Forward, Together Forward scholarships to support the memory of those who died in the years following the shooting, which has had a profound impact on the community at NIU.
5.Michigan: 66
It is acceptable to purchase a pistol from a private seller with a purchase license if you are at least 18 years old. A federally licensed (FFL) dealer may sell you a firearm if you are at least 21 years old. In Michigan, a long gun, or a firearm longer than 26 inches, may be purchased without a purchase license.
Anyone 18 years of age or older who is not subject to limitations due to a criminal history, mental health history, or other disqualifying factor may purchase a long gun in accordance with state law. According to Michigan law, a buyer of a long gun from a federal dealer or a private seller must be at least 18 years old, according to clickondetroit.com.
Oxford High School shooting, 2021
At his school in Oxford, Michigan, close to Detroit, a sophomore student is accused of shooting and killing four people while also injuring others. September is the date of his trial. Authorities claim that his parents disregarded warning signs, and they are now facing charges of involuntary manslaughter.
A mass shooting took place at Oxford High School on November 30, 2021 in Oxford Township, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. There were four student fatalities and seven injuries, including a teacher. Ethan Crumbley, a sophomore at the age of 15, was detained and charged as an adult with 24 crimes, including terrorism and murder.
For failing to lock up the handgun used in the shooting, Crumbley's parents, Jennifer and James Crumbley, were charged with involuntary manslaughter on December 3. The parents were sought after by the U.S. Marshals after they skipped their arraignment; on December 4, they were apprehended in Detroit. Beginning on December 9, lawsuits were brought against Oxford Community Schools, alleging that school administrators were negligent in their handling of Crumbley's warning signs before the shooting.
6. Ohio: 57
According to The Guardian, Ohio's permitless gun carry law for "qualifying" adults went into effect on Monday, removing restrictions on school teachers, custodians, and bus drivers carrying guns to work.
Following his announcement that he had signed House Bill 99, which reduces the number of hours of training for armed personnel from 728 to 24, Governor Mike DeWine stated that he still preferred law enforcement officers to carry weapons at schools.
It is no longer necessary for Ohio residents age 21 and older to complete eight hours of the handgun training course in order to carry and conceal a firearm. The law was signed as a result of the shooting deaths of 19 children and two teachers at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas. Additionally, it does away with the requirement that gun owners disclose to police their possession of a concealed weapon, though they must do so if prompted.
In Ohio, school employees have had access to firearms on school property for years with the permission of the local school board. They must undergo the same 700 hours of training as security guards or law enforcement officers, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled in 2021.
Only adults over 21 who are not prohibited from owning a firearm by state or federal law are eligible for "permitless carry" in Ohio. Adults who are legally allowed to possess a firearm will be able to conceal carry a handgun without a license or a background check under the new law.

West Liberty-Salem High School, Jan. 20, 2017
Dozens of medics and police rushed to West Liberty-Salem High School last year for a report of student who opened fire inside the school. Alleged gunman Ely Serna has been accused of bringing a shotgun to school and firing shots. Another student, 17-year-old Logan Cole, was shot twice in the chest and survived.
Linden-McKinley STEM Academy, Oct. 13, 2016
In October 2016, a shooting at Linden-McKinley STEM Academy in Columbus resulted in the injuries of two students. The gunfire struck two students from Linden-McKinley. After being shot in the chest, 15-year-old Marques Lamarr Johnson was taken to Nationwide Children's Hospital.
The same day as the shootings, his 12-year-old friend Ja'Quan Marquise-Lamont Curry received treatment for a gunshot wound to the shoulder and was discharged. Two additional teenagers were accused of participating in the shooting.
Chardon High School, Feb. 27, 2012
At Chardon High School, T.J. Lane, 17, killed three students and injured three more. He allegedly brought a.22-caliber pistol and a knife to the school and opened fire on a group of students in the cafeteria with 10 shots. Russell King Jr., 17, Demetrius Hewlin, 16, and Daniel Parmertor were all killed.
In March 2013, Lane was sentenced to three lifetime prison terms without the possibility of parole while sporting a white T-shirt with the word "killer" scrawled across it in large, ostensibly handwritten letters.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, September 6, 2019
Greg Harper and Damien Williams got into a fight outside the stadium after a football game at Jeannette High School, and it got so heated that Harper allegedly shot Williams in the chest after Williams allegedly punched Harper twice. Harper is accused of homicide and reckless endangerment in the death of Williams. In his not guilty plea, Harper stated that he had acted in self-defense.
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, January 19, 2022
A 15-year-old boy boarded a school van to go home when school was being dismissed at Oliver Citywide Academy. Two masked gunmen approached the van and shot the boy twice in the chest. The boy was taken to the hospital where he later died.
Erie, Pennsylvania, April 5, 2022
A student was wounded after multiple shots were fired at Erie High School around 9:20 am. No perpetrator was immediately identified and police were searching for a person who had fled campus shortly after the shooting.

A school shooting incident is recorded by the program "when a gun is brandished, fired, or a bullet hits school property for any reason, regardless of the number of victims, time of day, or day of the week."
Three school shooting incidents in February left their marks on the high school campuses in Brooklyn, Buffalo, and Mount Vernon. Shots fired at the time of dismissal were the cause of all three cases.
In one incident in East Greenbush, New York, in 2004, a 16-year-old student brought a shotgun to class, loaded it in the restroom, and then tried to shoot a student, but missed. Before a school official tackled him, he did shoot and hurt one teacher. After serving 15 years in prison, the shooter, Jon Romano, spoke with the police in February to discuss ways that authorities can look for signs that students are having problems in order to prevent further school shootings.
Teenagers are in possession of the weapons in the majority of these school shootings in New York. 33 of the shooters in the incidents, where the shooter's age was known with certainty, were between the ages of 13 and 17, according to the data. Eight were over the age of 21, and four were under the age of 18.
According to the Giffords Law Center, handguns can be legally owned or purchased in New York by those who are 21 years old or older. Twenty other states start allowing handgun purchases at the age of 18 as well.
According to the Giffords Law Center, however, people can purchase long guns in New York once they turn 18 and can own long guns if they are at least 16 years old. Shotguns and various types of rifles are considered long guns. The age requirement for purchasing a long gun is 21 in only six states. According to timesunion.com, Minnesota allows long gun possession at the age of 14 and Massachusetts allows it at the age of 15.
9.Maryland: 49
Maryland's Public Safety Code, Section 5-200s, contains laws that are specifically related to rifles. Antique weapons and weapons that can't be fired specifically are exempt from these laws.
In Maryland, unless the owner is a member of law enforcement, the armed forces or National guard, a correctional officer or a sheriff, a short-barreled rifle or short-barreled shotgun must be registered with the federal government.
If one is qualified under the laws of a neighboring state, they may also buy a rifle or shotgun from a federally authorized gun dealer in Maryland.
A person is also prohibited by the state from owning a rifle or shotgun if they have been found guilty of a "disqualifying crime as defined in [section] 5-101 of this title," have served more than two years in prison for a crime they were convicted of, are on the run, are "habitual drunkards," are CDS addicts, have a mental illness and a history of acting violently toward others, have been declared incompetent for trial, etc.
All of this is in addition to the Maryland law requirement that a firearm application be submitted prior to the purchase of a regulated firearm. In Maryland, a person must be at least 21 years old and not otherwise prohibited from purchasing a firearm in order to obtain a license.
A person is also prohibited from purchasing more than one regulated firearm in a 30-day period, according to wmar2news.com, unless they have received approval for the purchase of multiple firearms, the firearms are part of a private collection or collector series, or they are being purchased in bulk from an estate sale. Maryland passed 38 of the state's 50 gun laws, placing it seventh in Everytown's rankings of "Gun Law Strength."
These include a requirement for secure storage, similar to Texas, a background check and/or purchase permit requirement, a ban on assault weapons, and a law restricting "ghost guns," which was approved during the previous legislative session.
The NRA classifies Maryland as a 'Rights Restricted - Very Limited Issue' state and notes that handguns require a permit to purchase, a permit to carry, a permit to register the firearm, and a license for the owner. However, according to the NRA, none of these are necessary in Maryland for rifles and shotguns.

10.Georgia: 46
According to Georgian law, you must be at least 18 years old to own a handgun or a long gun, such as a rifle or shotgun. While it is legal to own a handgun in Georgia at the age of 18, under federal law you must be at least 21 years old to buy one.
The firearm must currently be carried either "in open manner and fully exposed to view" or "in the glove compartment, console, or similar compartment of the vehicle" without a permit. The person "may carry a handgun in any location in a motor vehicle" if they have a carry permit, so these limitations do not apply. According to daltonpd.com, a bill that would permit you to carry a firearm anywhere in your car has just been introduced in the legislature.
Prior to obtaining a carry permit in Georgia, there is no requirement for firearms instruction or training. Even though it is not necessary, it is strongly advised that the individual obtain, at the very least, fundamental training on how to use the firearm they own and be familiar with the regulations governing the carrying and use of firearms. The responsibility of carrying a gun for personal protection is enormous and should not be taken lightly.

A man running on the Miller Grove High School track saw someone trying to break into his car, which was parked on school property. When the man confronted the person breaking into his car, he was shot once. The man was taken to a local hospital and listed in stable condition.
