Following the issuance of Ministry Decision No. 47/2001 dated 11/9/2001, Sohar University has received official approval from the Ministry of Higher Education to establish the Sultanate of Oman's first private university. It began as the Sohar College of Applied Sciences before becoming a university in a ceremony attended by His Highness Sayed Asaad bin Toriq.
Sohar University was founded in 1998 as the Sohar College for Applied Sciences. At the time, the college's main overseas partner was the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside (UK). After meeting all requirements established by the Oman Ministry of Higher Education and the Higher Education Council, the University of Nizwa was granted legal status by ministerial decision No. 1/2004 on January 3, 2004. The University of Nizwa welcomed its first class of 1,200 students on October 16, 2004, with 88 percent of them being Omani women. The current campus is located in Birkat al-Mouz, about 20 kilometers northwest of Nizwa, near the famous Jabal al-Akhdhar. Construction on a new campus near the Farq-Hail highway began in March 2010.
Although the university is still unaccredited, it is in the final stages of institutional accreditation in accordance with the Oman Academic Accreditation Authority's academic standards.
7. National University of Science and Technology
NUST is an Omani private university founded in 2018 by the merger of two professional colleges, Caledonian College of Engineering and Oman Medical College (which offered degree programs in medicine and pharmacy). Approximately 4300 international students from 33 countries have graduated from the university. Three international universities have academic collaborations with NUST: Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland, West Virginia University in the United States, and the University of South Carolina in the United States.
8. University of Technology and Applied Sciences-Nizwa

The University of Technology and Applied Sciences-Nizwa (UTAS-Nizwa) is on the outskirts of Nizwa, about 12 kilometers from the city center. Nizwa Technical and Industrial College opened its doors in 1993. Its facilities were designed originally as a vocational training center, and the same infrastructure is still in use today. The college had 102 students, 22 academic staff, and 12 administrative staff in its first academic year. The academic program was implemented for two years and was taught in Arabic. The first class of graduates from the college graduated in 1995.
