It is always an honor and a dream to play in the World Cup. Many world football stars have not been able to attend a World Cup in their lifetime, while there are those who have attended up to 5 times. Brazil is the only team to have participated in all of the past 21 World Cups. Germany and Italy have 19 and 18 respectively.
Former Germany midfielder Lothar Matthaus holds the record for the most appearances in a World Cup with 25 appearances. During his career, Matthaus participated in 5 World Cups in 1982, 1986, 1990, 1994 and 1998.
Former Germany striker Miroslav Klose ranks second on the list with 24 matches over four World Cups (2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014). Klose currently holds the record as the top scorer in World Cup history with 16 goals.
The top 10 players who played the most at the World Cup did not have big names like C. Ronaldo, Messi, Zidane or "Alien" Ronaldo.
