Detailed Information - Top 10 Cars With the Best Gas Mileage in 2021

1. 2021 Toyota Prius Prime

133 MPGe / 54 MPG Combined | $28,220 | USN Overall Score: 7.5/10

The five-passenger 2021 Toyota Prius Prime places near the bottom of our hybrid and electric vehicles ranking. While the cabin is fairly spacious, passengers up front may feel a bit constrained by the Prime's overly large dash. In addition, the powertrain only produces a timid 121 horsepower.

On the plus side, fuel economy is fantastic. City-dwellers will appreciate the car's 25-mile all-electric range, and batteries charge in as little as 2 hours and 10 minutes with a 240-volt outlet.

There's a nice list of standard infotainment features, including Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, Android Auto, three USB ports, and a 7-inch touch screen. An 11.3-inch screen is available, but it's trickier to operate than the standard display. Active-safety features include forward collision warning and pedestrian detection.

2. 2021 Honda Clarity

110 MPGe / 42 MPG Combined | $33,400 | USN Overall Score: N/A

The 2021 Honda Clarity has no overall score due to missing safety data. Nevertheless, this car has several strengths. When fully charged, it has an all-electric driving range of 48 miles. It takes about 2.5 hours to charge with a 240-volt outlet. The engine and batteries make a combined 212 horsepower, which is enough to move the car quickly from a stop. It can struggle, however, when climbing to highway speeds.

Passenger space is good, though rear-row headroom is tight for taller people. The seats are comfortable, and heated front seats are standard. The infotainment system and cargo space leave a bit to be desired, though. An 8-inch touch screen is standard, but doesn't respond quickly to inputs. Small buttons make selecting the right function tricky. The 15.5-cubic-foot trunk is a bit small for the class.

3. 2021 Hyundai Ioniq

59 MPG Combined | $23,200 | USN Overall Score: 7.8/10

The 2021 Hyundai Ioniq comes in multiple flavors. The Ioniq Blue trim earns the top fuel economy rating of 59 mpg combined, while the Ioniq earns a very respectable 55 mpg combined.

Most cars with exceptional fuel economy have less-than-exciting engines. That's sadly true with the Ioniq. While plenty of low-end torque lets you move quickly from a standstill, passing cars on the highway will require some planning.

Dull handling and limited headroom for rear-seat passengers are other drawbacks. However, its maximum 26.5 cubic feet of cargo space is excellent for cars in the class. The Ioniq also earns high marks for safety, including a top Superior rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for its front crash prevention system. Standard active-safety features include a driver drowsiness monitor and adaptive high-beam headlights.

4. 2021 Honda Insight

52 MPG Combined | $22,930 | USN Overall Score: 8.0/10

The 2021 Honda Insight is a hybrid compact car that offers few standard frills, but plenty of optional tech niceties. The engine puts out just 151 horsepower, but the transmission makes the most of it. The Insight scoots up to speed quickly and has plenty of pop for most driving situations.

If the Ioniq is too anonymous and the Prius too obnoxious, the Honda Insight is the sweet spot. With styling heavily influenced by the Civic (and occupying the place of the discontinued Civic Hybrid), the new Insight features a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter engine and a lone electric motor to produce 151 horsepower. Fuel economy is ample, although the Insight isn't quite as efficient as the aforementioned cars from Hyundai and Toyota. That said, this Honda is safer for 2021.

5. 2021 Toyota Corolla Hybrid

52 MPG Combined | $23,400 | USN Overall Score: 7.9/10

As a knock-around-town car, the 2021 Toyota Corolla Hybrid is worth a look. The cabin is Spartan, but the materials are of good quality and include soft-touch surfaces. Seating is acceptable, but not great for long trips. Also, headroom in the back may be tight for taller passengers.

The Toyota Corolla Hybrid is a weird car, considering the Prius exists. The two cars share powertrains, with a 1.8-liter gas engine, an electric motor, and a nickel-metal hydride battery, along with an electrically controlled continuously variable transmission. The Corolla's more conventional shape, though, is less aerodynamic, which is where the difference in fuel economy comes from. That said, the Corolla Hybrid is nice alternative in the Toyota family if you can’t stomach the way the Prius looks.

52 MPG Combined | $24,525 | USN Overall Score: 7.7/10

Once the king of hybrids, the 2021 Toyota Prius remains a decent car in an ever-more-crowded field. It has good cargo space for a car its size, with 50.7 cubic-feet available when you fold down the second row. The seats are supportive, and passengers will find lots of room to stretch out. Cabin materials, while not bad, are not up to the standards set by some rivals'.

The standard features list is long. The infotainment system includes a 7-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and three USB ports. Active-safety features include automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control.

The car's 121 horsepower won't get your heart racing, but it's enough power to handle most situations on the road.

7. 2021 Toyota Camry Hybrid

52 MPG Combined | $27,270 | USN Overall Score: 8.4/10

If you're in the market for a midsize hybrid sedan, the Toyota Camry Hybrid is definitely worth checking out. The engine and electric motor create 208 horsepower – plenty for most driving needs. The ride is smooth, but the steering isn't very engaging. Also, the regenerative braking system can be grabby at lower speeds.

Cargo space is good for the class, and passengers in both rows will find plenty of head- and legroom. Cabin materials are good, but the base model's interior has a lot of hard plastics. Higher trims shed those, but you also will get considerably lower fuel economy owing to a different battery.

Tech features abound. The smooth-operating infotainment system has a 7-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and a Wi-Fi hot spot. Standard active-safety features include forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking.

8. 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

52 MPG Combined | $27,750 | USN Overall Score: 8.7/10

The 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is the No. 1 vehicle in our ranking of hybrid and electric cars. It's a passenger's delight: the front is roomy, and tall people riding in the back will find plenty of leg- and headroom – even if the riders up front slide their seats back. Cabin materials in all trims are exceptional.

A large 8-inch touch screen controls the infotainment system, which features Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a USB port. Active-safety features abound and include blind spot warning, a rear-seat reminder, and automatic emergency braking. The Sonata Hybrid also earns great safety scores.

A six-speed transmission gets the most out of the motor and battery, producing good acceleration and power. While the Sonata Hybrid isn't very engaging to drive, the ride comfort is excellent.

9. 2021 Honda Accord Hybrid

Photo: cars.usnews
Photo: cars.usnews

48 MPG Combined | $26,370 | USN Overall Score: 8.3/10

The 2021 Honda Accord Hybrid is a joy to drive. Its power plant makes plenty of power, and the suspension delivers crisp handling. The Accord Hybrid confidently moves through tight turns, and the steering provides excellent road feedback. Unlike many hybrids, the brakes feel smooth and linear, stopping the car with authority.

Seating is comfortable, even on longer journeys, and four adults can ride in the cabin comfortably. Headroom in the rear could be better, though. Cabin materials are upscale, though the design is more functional than forward-looking. The infotainment system is easy to operate and comes with an 8-inch touch screen, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A slew of active-safety features are standard, and include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive head lights.

10. 2021 Toyota Avalon Hybrid

Photo: cars.usnews
Photo: cars.usnews

44 MPG Combined | $37,000 | USN Overall Score: 8.4/10

The 2021 Avalon Hybrid is Toyota's largest sedan, and one of U.S. News' top-ranking hybrid and electric cars. It's a passenger-centric car that offers comfortable seats and lots of head- and legroom in both rows. The cabin materials are superb; even the base trim has synthetic-leather-trimmed upholstery, and soft-touch plastics are plentiful.

The engine and battery make 215 horsepower. This is a heavy car, so this powertrain won't rocket you around town. Still, it's more than enough punch for most driving situations. The ride is smooth, and there are four driving modes: EV, Eco, Normal, and Sport.

There are plenty of standard tech features. The infotainment system has a 9-inch touch screen, Amazon Alexa, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and five USB ports. The lengthy active-safety features list includes blind spot monitoring and automatic emergency braking.
