Ford Mustang GT Is Most American Car With 88.5 Percent Domestic Parts

Every year, the American University Kogod School of Business creates an index to calculate the vehicles with the highest proportion of American-made parts.

The university has released its annual Most American Cars List for 2021, the Ford Mustang GT with a manual transmission tops the list with a score of 88.5 percent.

What is American Car?

Today, given global parts sourcing and assembly, a model carrying an Asian- or European-brand badge may actually contain more U.S. labor and content than a competing vehicle from a Detroit-based automaker.

To calculate these scores, the American University doesn't exclusively look at where the parts come from. It also factors where the final assembly occurs, the production location of the engine and transmission, whether the automaker's headquarters are in the US, and even where research and development happens.

Tesla has the highest average total domestic content at 81 percent. General Motors and Ford also ranked well with an average of over 70 percent.

In 2020, the Ford Ranger topped the ranking, but it fell to 16th place in 2021. The reason was that the total domestic content in the trucked dropped to 45 percent, versus 70 percent in 2020.

In 2020, the Chevrolet Camaro with an automatic transmission ranked second in 2020. It dropped to seventh this year. The amount of total domestic content went from 83 percent in 2020 to 78.5 percent in 2021.

The top-ranked Mustang boasts 88.5 percent domestic content compared to 76 percent for the 10th-ranked cars.

7 Criteria

The index uses seven points derived from publicly available data:

Profit Margin: This was measured based on the location of an automaker's headquarters. If an automaker's global headquarters is located in the US, the model receives a 6. If it is not, it receives a 0. The assumption here is that (on average), 6% of a vehicle's value is profit margin, so if it is a U.S. automaker, the profits remain in the country.

Labor. This category considers where the car is assembled. If a model is assembled in the US, it receives a 6. If not, the model receives a 0. We assume that approximately 6% of the vehicle's value is labor content.

Research and Development (R&D). This category looks at the location of a car's R&D activities. If the model is a product of a US company, it receives a 6. If it is the product of a foreign company but is assembled in the U.S. it receives a 3; if it is a foreign import it receives a 1.

Inventory, Capital and other expenses. If assembly occurs in the US, the model receives an 11; if not, it receives a 0.

Engine. If the engine is produced in the US, the model receives a 14; if not it receives a 0.

Transmission. If the transmission is produced in the US, the model receives a 7; if not it receives a 0.

Body, Chassis, and Electrical Components. 50 % of a vehicle's score is assigned to this category. The AALA percentage is divided into two to derive this score.

It also earns a spot on our Editors' Choice list. It borrows some styling cues from the company's Model S sedan and Model X SUV, but goes its own way with a unique interior design and an all-glass roof.

Acceleration is quick, and the Model 3's chassis is playful as well—especially the Performance model's, which receives a sportier suspension and a track driving mode. But EV buyers are more likely interested in driving range than speediness or handling, and the Model 3 delivers there too.
