Top 10 Best Male Footballers In The World
1. Robert Lewandowski - Bayern Munich / Poland

Age: 33
Team: Bayern Munich / Poland
Position: Forward
The Best FIFA Men's Player 2020 scored 41 league goals – a record for a Bundesliga season – as his club won the title again, adding to a FIFA Club World Cup win. He was also prolific for Poland, scoring three goals in three matches at UEFA EURO 2020.
The Best FIFA Men's Player is given to the most outstanding player in men's football as voted for by an international jury comprising the current coaches of all men's national teams (one per team), current captains of all men's national teams (one per team), one specialist journalist from each territory represented by a national team and fans registered on FIFA.com.
From a shortlist of 11 male players, the panel will select the winner for their respective achievements during the period from 8 October 2020 to 7 August 2021.
2. Lionel Messi

Age: 34
Team: Paris Saint-Germain / Argentina
Position: Forward
How anyone can watch Lionel Messi and not feel a giddy rush is beyond me. Messi is objectively and subjectively The Best – now and ever.
In terms of raw numbers, he continued to carry Barcelona on his diminutive shoulders for years, right until the end. He scored 30 goals in 35 La Liga games last term with a relatively poor unit around him. That was his fifth-poorest season out of 13 years with 30+ league appearances and it was still phenomenal.
Overall, Messi racked up 672 goals and just short of 300 assists in 778 games for Barcelona across a range of competitions.
One silly rod often used to beat the Argentine star has been his apparent failure on the international scene. Unfortunately for Messi's critics, he has silenced that debate for good after dragging Argentina to the Copa America title in 2021. Oh, and Messi has 76 goals in 151 international games overall.
Beyond raw data, Messi is simply the best footballer on the planet to watch. No one can set pulses racing on a football field quite like him, no one boasts the same amount of unquantifiable magic, no one plays football like Lionel Messi.
3. Mohamed Salah
Age: 29
Team: Liverpool / Egypt
Position: Forward
Even when the last tree has been cut down, when the last river has run dry, when the Championship is fully Neil Warnock-free with no chance of him returning and when the plague of foul throws has been successfully and permanently eradicated from professional full-backs… Mohamed Salah will slow down.
32 league goals in his first season back in the Premier League, a successive golden boot, then a title, then a Champions League; the Egyptian King has barely stopped for breath, slicing between left-back and center-back either side of COVID, through Liverpool’s good form and bad. He is inevitable. He will score when his teammates are performing; he will score despite their failures. And it’s only that his close control, pace, agility, and finishing are so good that it gets lost in the mire how good his final pass can be, too.
2021 did not bring about any gold for Salah. Instead, he dragged Liverpool into the Champions League, has fronted their title bid and put in a claim as the most talented player on the planet right now. Is anyone arguing? You think 2021 was good – wait for what he has in store at AFCON, the World Cup, and the Premier League run-in…
4. Karim Benzema

Age: 34
Team: Real Madrid / France
Position: Forward
The Frenchman is getting progressively better with age and has arguably been in the form of his life in 2021 with 14 goals in 15 games this season. A complete center-forward without clear weaknesses who works hard for the team and moves extremely well without the ball, Benzema often chooses a delicate finish over a powerful one. He plays with great self-belief and charisma and has stood out as a leader for Real Madrid in recent years.
Real Madrid had a tough year and France endured mixed fortunes, but Benzema never stopped scoring. He returned to the national team after a six-year absence and finished Euro 2020 with four goals, then scored in the semifinal and final as les Bleus won the Nations League.
5. Jorginho
Photo: goal |
Age: 30
Team: Chelsea / Italy
Position: Midfielder
Italy did pretty well in 2021. They won gold in the men’s 100 meters in Tokyo, scooped the Eurovision gong and even the winner of the Great British Bake-Off was Italian. He’s been so omnipresent this year, mind, that it’s almost a surprise Jorginho wasn’t present for all three (we’d love to see him bake a showstopper).
The midfielder, panned by his own fans for being Maurizio Sarri’s teacher’s pet, has gone on to become a byword for success. The steady metronome throughout Frank Lampard’s implosion became a pillar for Thomas Tuchel to shape his side around; likewise, the Brazilian-born deep-lying playmaker was undroppable for Roberto Mancini at the international level.
Jorginho’s 2021 has seen him go from an awkward fit to one of the most respected players on the continent. Through it all, he’s been the consistency that managers and fans alike have looked to. Whatever wave of COVID we go through next, he’ll likely still be breaking up play, cheekily slotting home pennos, and lining his cabinet with silver.
6. Kylian Mbappé

Age: 23
Team: Paris Saint-Germain / France
Position: Forward
A complete forward without obvious weaknesses in his game, Mbappe refers to receiving the ball wide on the left in order to cut infield to look for a finish or a ball behind the opposing defense, courtesy of his lightning-quick, razor-sharp movements. Though naturally right-footed, he's almost equally adept with the opposite foot. So slick and refined in front of goal, the Frenchman can finish in any way imaginable. He is exceptionally quick over short and medium distances and simply glides past opponents with the minimum of effort.
A stunning hat trick against Barcelona in February was his best Champions League performance. His quick-footed first was exceptional, as was the third, curled effortlessly past Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Mbappe's brace at European champions Bayern Munich in the next round was not bad either.
7. Erling Haaland
Photo: vov |
Age: 21
Team: Borussia Dortmund / Norway
Position: Forward
There was a lot of speculation over whether the Norwegian would leave Dortmund last summer but, having sold Jadon Sancho to Manchester United, the Bundesliga club did not contemplate selling their main asset. The 21-year-old continues to average roughly a goal a game for club and country, his consistency remarkable for a player so young. He was injured for a spell in late October and November and during that period Borussia Dortmund lost so much ground in their Champions League group that they were eliminated. He may drop a place in our rankings but he was only nine points behind Kylian Mbappé. He made 211 out of 219 voting slips this year and two judges had him as the best player in the world in 2021. Maybe he is not quite there yet, but there is no reason why he can’t be in the future.
8. Cristiano Ronaldo
Photo: thanhnien |
Age: 36
Team: Manchester United / Portugal
Position: Forward
Ronaldo is a footballing chameleon. He has conquered Europe across a variety of leagues in a variety of positions and adapted to fresh circumstances every step of the way.
His move back to Manchester United raised plenty of eyebrows after appearing to go a little off the boil at Juventus, but he has proven that he maintains the pace, the finishing prowess and otherworldly desire to win that took him to the very top in the first place.
Ronaldo may have slid a little down the rankings by virtue of success as part of a team unit – his Juventus spell didn't bear the Champions League trophy his arrival promised or aid team cohesion – but he remains one of the most lethal strikers around.
9. N'Golo Kanté
Photo: bangsport |
Age: 30
Team: Chelsea / France
Position: Midfielder
N’Golo Kante’s story is one that you never tire of telling. Rejected from the academy at Clairefontaine, the pocket-sized pick-pocket went onto win back-to-back Premier Leagues, then an FA Cup, a World Cup, and a Europa League title. 2021 saw him complete the set.
Chelsea’s man of the match in Porto’s Champions League final put in the quintessential Kante performance. It was ubiquitous, disciplined, and gritty, yet with an assured air, that’s developed with age. The Frenchman is still running at top speed, as key for club and country, and still one of the most celebrated central midfielders of a generation. He’s still the most likable footballer on Earth, to boot.
And he’s still capable of surprising us all. May that smiling Parisian, rejected from big academies and underestimated by every opponent keep surprising us all in 2022 and beyond.
10. Kevin De Bruyne
Photo: onsports |
Age: 30
Team: Manchester City / Belgium
Position: Midfielder
No player in the Premier League is as technically gifted as Kevin De Bruyne. The eagle-eyed playmaker has technical ability and intelligence to dominate games both at home and abroad. His physicality – both in speed and strength – is also underestimated.
Manchester City would not be the same without De Bruyne. He is the assist king, with City scoring a goal provided by the Belgian once every two Premier League games. Of course, having a team of glittering stars around him aids De Bruyne's club performances, but the 29-year-old has also produced for Belgium.
We haven't dug into the minutely detailed stats for every player, but here are some numbers from KDB's 181 Premier League games so far. He plays 53 passes per match, has created 116 'big chances' and up to the 2021/22 season has recorded 120 goal contributions (78 assists, 42 goals).
There's a feeling that one more off-the-wall season could nudge De Bruyne to the very top of this list. In fact, others may already place him there and it would be hard to mount a case against them.
