2.Addison, Texas

Although the celebration takes place on July 3, the Addison Kaboom Town Independence Day celebration in Addison, Texas, located north of Dallas, still found its way onto our list of best fireworks. It’s one of the most iconic 4th of July firework displays in the country, drawing almost 400,000 annual visitors to gaze in astonishment as more than 1,500 pounds of fireworks launch a barrage of color against the dark sky. The fireworks can be watched throughout the city, including at watch parties at the area’s many fabulous restaurants. The event traditionally features a concert and airshow and this year, organizers say the airshow will include flyovers across town.

3.Saint Louis

Saint Louis, Missouri is home to one of the most iconic 4th of July extravaganzas in the country. Located at Gateway National Park. The details for this year’s Fair Saint Louis haven’t been released as of this writing, but the event is scheduled to go on as usual. If it’s anything like previous years, guests can expect live music, cooking demonstrations, games, dog shows, and of course, a spectacular burst of vivid fireworks to conclude the evening.

4.Nashville, Tennessee

Music City is going all out this Independence Day with the Let Freedom Sing! Music City July 4th celebration. Located downtown, this year will feature the largest fireworks display in the city’s history, accompanied by the Grammy-winning Nashville Symphony. If that’s not enough, the celebration will also include a concert headlined by country music superstar, Brad Paisley. The event, which is sure to feature some of the best 4th of July fireworks, is free to the public. The concert stage will be located at First and Broadway, and the Nashville Symphony will perform at the Ascend Amphitheater following the concert. On the 4th of July, fireworks will be deployed at Paxton Golf Course and the high aerial display will be visible from different parts of the city, allowing the community to take in the moment from Paducah’s various neighborhoods and viewing spots without clustering in one place. The show will begin at 9:30 p.m. These American flag photos will make your heart burst with pride.

6.Portland, Oregon

The city of Portland, Oregon has a long-standing tradition of celebrating the 4th of July with a case of the blues—a blues festival, that is. In 2021, Portland’s Waterfront Blues Festival will take place at the Lot at Zidell Yards, Portland’s premier outdoor, socially distanced music venue. The festival takes place from July 2 to 5 with an enormous fireworks display planned for July 4th. This is a ticketed event with both day passes and multi-day passes available. Tickets will be sold in pods so spectators can safely enjoy themselves with a crew of their friends. Full safety protocols will be published online prior to the event. Find out why dogs are so scared of fireworks.

7.St. Augustine, Florida

St. Augustine, Florida is home to some of the most stunning historic buildings in the country but on July 4th, all eyes will be trained upon the explosions of color bursting above the waterfront. The fireworks will illuminate the sky over Matanzas Bay, in full view of the Castillos de San Marcos and The Bridge of Lions. Visitors are invited to stand along the streets or the bridge to take in the fireworks show, which will be preceded by a two-hour program of live big band music played by a local orchestra. Pass the time before the start of the fireworks by telling these funny 4th of July jokes.

8.Tulsa, Oklahoma

Oklahoma will always be known as the place where the wind comes sweeping down the plain, but the state is also known for some pretty fantastic 4th of July celebrations. This year, at Tulsa’s annual Freedom Fest, the community will enjoy kid’s activities, food trucks, live performances, and the Red Bull SkyDiving Team landing at River West Festival Park. The event will be concluded by the explosion of brightly colored fireworks spraying across the night sky.

In 2021, the organizers promise the event will be bigger and better than ever. The fireworks will be launched from a barge in the waters in front of Doheny State Beach, so visitors can watch the pyrotechnics from the shore or on the water on private boats or through ticketed cruises through Dana Wharf. Please check just prior to the event for the most current information on mask requirements and COVID protocols. Hosting a barbecue? Play these 4th of July games the whole family will love.

Fun facts about fireworks

1.It’s amazing how a firework can end up looking like a chrysanthemum or smiley face when it has only three main components—an oxidizer, a fuel, and a chemical mixture to produce the color. The ingredients are placed in a small tube called an aerial shell. The explosive materials are called stars that form the colorful spheres, cubes, cylinders, and other shapes that explode into complex designs.

2.To get fireworks into the air, the aerial shells are placed in a tube called a mortar. Fireworks staff light a fast-acting fuse below the shell that contains gunpowder and the gunpowder explodes, creating a build-up of heat and gas and a whole lot of pressure. When the pressure reaches critical mass, off it goes up into the sky. But that’s not the end. Once the shell is high off the ground, another fuse inside the aerial shell that’s on a time delay ignites, causing the bursting charge to explode and light up all those stars you see from the ground.

3.Brilliant, glowing colors come from different metal elements. When the chemicals in fireworks burn, energy is released in the form of light. The chemicals burn in different wavelengths of light depending on the metal element. For example, deep reds are the result of burning strontium and lithium compounds; barium gives off a green color, and copper produces blues. Blue, however, is a fickle hue and considered the most difficult to produce because the copper compound has to be heated just right to give off a brilliant blue color. If it burns too hot, the color is lost, and if it’s too low, there is no intensity.

4.After a firework expends itself, the remaining debris is biodegradable paper and a small amount of carbon.
