Police said two women died at the scene, and a third woman died later from her injuries. Their names have not been released.
The accident occurred just before midnight outside a home, the Honolulu Fire Department said in a statement. |
Honolulu Police Chief Joe Logan said they are investigating.
“Based on what we’ve seen and heard, it looks like someone at the party lit a big firework in the driveway. It fell over and shot into boxes of more fireworks, causing the explosion you’ve seen on the news,” he said.
Police found more fireworks that didn’t explode, Logan said.

Most of the 20-plus patients transported to hospitals were critically injured with burns over much of their bodies, according to Dr. Jim Ireland, Honolulu Emergency Services Department director. A 3-year-old was among those taken to nearby hospitals by ambulance, he said.
Ireland said an additional 10 to 15 people suffered what were considered “minor” injuries and did not necessarily require ambulance transport to the hospital, including “a 12-year-old girl with burns on her leg and some shrapnel.”
