Horror fire tears through New Jersey apartment building

On the afternoon of January 2, a devastating fire broke out at the Cambridge Hall apartment complex at 860 Lower Ferry Road in Ewing, Mercer County. Multiple 911 calls around 3 p.m. alerted authorities to the scene, reporting heavy smoke and flames emanating from the building.

Fire and Rescue Efforts

Emergency responders, including all three Ewing Fire Departments, rushed to the scene of the two-alarm fire. Upon arrival, they discovered a young boy trapped in a fourth-floor apartment where the fire had originated. The building was promptly evacuated as rescue teams worked to reach the child.

Firefighters eventually located and rescued an unconscious six-year-old boy from the apartment. Despite their efforts, the child was pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby hospital. Several neighboring fire departments, including Trenton, Lawrence, Pennington, and Hopewell, assisted in extinguishing the blaze.

Casualties and Displacement

The fire left 16 residents from 12 damaged apartments displaced. Emergency personnel treated and transported three civilians, one firefighter, and 13 police officers to local hospitals for injuries including smoke inhalation, minor burns, and fatigue.

A witness, Joey Cvoliga, described the scene as chaotic, noting the streets filled with fire trucks and police cars. Cell phone footage captured by another bystander showed black smoke and flames billowing from a fifth-floor window, with responders breaking windows and scrambling to evacuate residents.

Investigation and Assistance

The fire was declared under control by 4 p.m., but its aftermath has left significant damage. Officials have stated that the cause of the fire remains under investigation, though it does not appear to be suspicious.

Capital Health Medics, in collaboration with EMS personnel, provided medical assistance to victims, while local organizations are now aiding displaced residents in finding shelter and resources.

This tragic event serves as a reminder of the bravery of first responders and the importance of fire safety measures in residential buildings. As investigations continue, the community mourns the loss of a young life and offers support to those affected.
