Telangana Formation Day is celebrated every year on June 2 in the state. This day is being observed from 2014 when the state was formed via the Telangana Bill passed in the Lok Sabha as well as the Rajya Sabha. On March 4, 2014, the Government of India declared June 2 as the Telangana Formation Day. The birth of the state and the struggle that went into the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh is remembered on this day.
Telangana Formation Day: History
Satvahanas (250 BCE – 200 CE), ruled the region between the Krishna and Godavari rivers.
Under the rule of the Katatiyas (950 CE – 1323 CE), the region gained the Golden Age and established Warangal as its capital.
Allaikin Khilji’s general Malik Kafur attacked Warangal and Prataparudra in 1323, which led to the descent of Katatiya. Until 1687, the region remained under the control of the Delhi Sultanate.
Nizam-ul-Mulk Asaf Jah (Asif Jahin Nizam dynasty) was founded and in 1769, made Hyderabad his capital. From 1724-1948 Asaf Jahis. Emperor Farruksiyar appointed Qamar-ud-din Khan in 1712 as the Deccan and gave him the name Nizam-ul-Mulk. The independent province of the Mughal empire was established when Qamar-du-din Khan defeated Mubariz Khan and recaptured Deccan Suba. He took the name Asif Jah and became known as the Asif Jhahi dynasty. He named the place Hyderabad Deccan. The division of Telangana namely Medak and Warangal was part of their empire. The city of Hyderabad became the official capital of Nizams in 1769.
The British and Nizam Asaf Jah IV signed the Subidiary Alliance in 1799 and lost control of the defense and foreign affairs. Hyderabad State became the highest nation among the presidents and provinces of British India.
Until 1946, the region remained under British rule and the Nizam of Hyderabad. This is also the year when the uprising was ended by the Namaz’s Razakars or the military.
After the independence of India (1947), Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel asked the last Nizam of Hyderabad, Osman Ali Khan, to join the Indian Union but after repeated requests he refused. On September 17, 1948, the Indian army connected Hyderabad and Nizam and surrendered to Sardar Patel. Eventually, Hyderabad State adopted the Indian Union.
To provide recommendations for the reorganization of State borders, in December 1953, a Land Reform Commission was appointed. The language of both provinces is common but the panel did not approve of the immediate meeting of Telangana and Andhra. But with the intervention of the leaders, in November 1956, the lands of Telangana and Andhra were united.
The 2013 UPA government led by Manmohan Singh abolished the Formation of Telangana and completed the process by passing a state bill in both houses of Parliament in February 2014.
In April 2014, the General Elections, Telangana Rashtra Samithi emerged victorious by winning 63 of the 119 seats and forming a government. Sri K Chandrashekar Rao has been sworn in as Telangana’s first prime minister. Telangana Province was officially opened on June 2, 2014.
Telangana Formation Day: Significance
Telangana Formation Day symbolises the day when the state of Telangana was officially separated from Andhra Pradesh. This day celebrates the success of the Telangana Movement that led to the birth of a new state. On this day, the state Chief Minister hoists the national flag. After that, a ceremonial parade is held at the parade grounds in Telangana.

This day signifies the sustained Telangana Movement history through the years for a separate state. State every year sponsors several events. Telangana State Awards for exemplary contribution in different fields are presented at different events. At several Hotels, Telangana food festivals are organised etc. But this year due to COVID-19, the celebration will not be as grand as always.

All 30 districts in Telangana celebrate this day by hoisting the national flag. Apart from this, the state of Telangana also awards its citizens for outstanding contribution in fields such as science, art, and literature. The state organises Telangana food festival across various hotels. Multiple cultural events are held at the Ravindra Bharathi auditorium.

Celebration during COVID-19
On June 2, Telangana Formation Day is celebrated across the state by hoisting the national flag but in 2020 the celebrations was not as grand as previous years due to coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. On Telangana Formation Day, people of the state enjoy their day by spending their time with friends, neighbours, and their family.
In 2019, Telangana Chief Minister and TSR chief K Chandrashekhar Rao celebrated the Telangana Foundation Day by paying tributes at the memorial of Telangana martyrs on the road opposite public gardens and unfurled the national flag at the venue. CM Rao was also given the guard of honour by an armed police contingent.
On Telangana Formation Day, the state also awards its citizens for exemplary contribution in various fields like science, art, and literature but this year this event too will remain affected due to coronavirus outbreak.
