New Zealand shares crown of world's most powerful passport. Both NZ and Germany have visa-free access or visa on arrival to 136 countries. Last October New Zealand topped the ranking on its own but then subsequently dropped down the index before bouncing back recently. Another regular index from Henley & Partners in April had the New Zealand passport in joint seventh Japan topped that poll, with Singapore second, and Germany and South Korea sharing third place.

Following New Zealand and Germany are five countries with the same score of 135 – Finland, Australia, Spain, Switzerland and Japan.

The UAE retained its position in the Henley Passport Index, with its passport ranked as the 15th-strongest globally. This makes it the only Arab country in the top 20 in 2021. UAE passport holders have visa-free access to 175 countries, according to the third-quarter results released on Tuesday. The country's ranking places it in a tie with Monaco and just ahead of Bulgaria, Chile and Romania tied in 16th, Croatia in 17th and Hong Kong in 18th place.

Even countries with highly successful Covid-19 vaccine rollouts are still bound by travel restrictions.

Since 2011, China has climbed 22 places -- from 90th position to 68th -- while the UAE has gone all the way from No. 65 to No. 15. Its work on strengthening diplomatic ties around the world now means that its citizens are allowed easy access to 174 destinations, compared to the 67 destinations of a decade ago.
