As we prepare to transition to September, students will imminently be resuming their studies.

The first day is Thursday, September 5th. The initial days of rest, which are connected to the Jewish festival of Rosh Hashanah, occur approximately four weeks later, specifically on October 3-4. Indigenous Peoples' Day, also known as Italian Heritage Day, falls on October 14th, which is 10 days after the current date.

The academic calendar of the city's Department of Education (DOE) consists of approximately twenty-four days off between the beginning and end of classes.

The calendar designates time off for religious holidays such as Good Friday, Yom Kippur, and Eid al-Fitr. Additionally, it includes week-long breaks for winter recess, mid-winter recess, and spring recess, which encompass Christmas and Passover. Diwali has been included as an official holiday in public schools.

The school calendar includes designated breaks for Italian Heritage Day/Indigenous Peoples’ Day (Columbus Day), Election Day, Thanksgiving, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, and Juneteenth.

Additionally, the city will grant students a day of absence on Election Day, which falls on November 5th.

The calendar also displays the dates for parent-teacher conference days in elementary, middle, and high schools.
