The History of Noiva do Cordeiro

This city was established by Maria Senhorinha de Lima. Maria's parents compelled her to marry, but she ran away, so the villagers cast her out of their hamlet. After that, Maria established Noiva do Cordeiro as a home for widows and single mothers who had been rejected by the surrounding community.

Around 1940, a pastor named Anisio Pereira settled down here with a local teen bride and established a church. He then attempted to impose extremely stringent moral norms, which included a ban on women drinking alcohol, listening to music, cutting their hair, and using contraceptives.

The women of Noiva do Cordeiro vowed to never again submit to male authority after the death of Pastor Anisio in 1995. They began by dissolving the pastor's religious group, which had been led by males. Since then, women have held sway over Noiva do Cordeiro, resulting in an imbalance of the sexes due to an influx of females and a dearth of males.

Noiva do Cordeiro: Where the most beautiful women look for bachelors

It's like the opening gambit of a bad Hollywood romance. A Brazilian town populated only by women has made an appeal for eligible bachelors.

More than 600 women live in the town of Noiva do Cordeiro, south-east Brazil. And most of them are aged between 20 and 35 years old.

They have now sent an open invitation to any interested candidates. Men that visit this area of the Brazilian countryside would be wise to keep in mind that it is predominately a women's domain.

Some of the women at Noiva de Cordeiro are already married with children, but their husbands and adult sons are forced to find jobs far from home during the week and are only permitted to return on the weekends.

It means that women run everything in the rural community, from the farms to the schools to the churches.

Several locals feel this improvement has made their community stronger.

Many sexist stereotypes are unfounded, and women do excel in many areas where men fall short. The 49-year-old Rosalee Fernandes argues that the town is more beautiful, better organized, and more harmonic now than it would be if men were in charge.

When disagreements emerge, we take a more feminine approach, seeking common ground rather than raising our voices.

Everything, even the land we farm, is shared amongst us. In this community, there is no rivalry. No one is more important than the other.

The locals have pooled their resources to purchase a massive widescreen TV for the community center where everyone can gather to watch soap operas in comfort.

And you can always take a break to do each other's hair and nails, try on each other's clothes, and chat.

No one in Noiva do Cordeiro would change it if they could, but now they have to deal with a single issue.

Nelma Fernandes, age 23, says it's hopeless for her neighbors, who are famous in the area for their stunning beauty, to find a suitable partner.

The only available males for us unattached women to date are either already taken or distantly related to us. The last time I kissed a man was a long time ago, she admitted.

Everybody has fantasies of finding true love and starting a family. But we've settled down here and don't want to have to leave town to locate a husband.

Due to a dearth of available batchelors, the many suitable young women in the community have put out a call for suitors, albeit ones who are open to adjusting to a world where women hold most of the power.

'We'd like to get to know males who would leave their own lives and come to be a part of ours,' Ms. Fernandes said.

But first they must consent to do what we advise and to live as we prescribe.

One of the most beautiful ladies in the hamlet, Marcia Fernandes, 33, a part-time folk singer, adds, "It's fantastic having all the women working together here. Because we are always with friends and always looking out for each other, life is good even when we are working hard and sharing it together.

The town's history is marked by a persistent gender gap dating all the way back to the nineteenth century. Maria Senhorinha de Lima, whose name translates to "bride of the lamb," created the town in 1891 after being excommunicated from her church and home after being suspected of adultery.

The discrimination persists to this day. Rosalee Fernandes, 49, a fourth-generation resident of the village, says, "We were entirely isolated because of the hostility we encountered as a result." Fernandes has been leading a campaign to ensure that the government do not continue to marginalize the community.

She insists that despite appearances, the town does have males; they just spend the majority of their time elsewhere throughout the week, either at the mines or in Belo Horizonte, the next major city.

The women really miss the men, she continues. When they come back for the weekend, it's a welcome sight.

Noiva do Cordeiro's female members are well aware that they belong to a minority in Brazil's rural areas. Yet the pace of change in this country is quite rapid.

Dilma Rousseff is Brazil's female president, while Maria das Gracas Foster is the only female head of a major oil corporation anywhere in the globe. According to the firm Grant Thornton, women make up 27 percent of top executives in Brazil's most successful businesses, while they only make up 20 percent in the United Kingdom.

Because of its recent notoriety, the distant Noiva do Cordeiro is now on the itinerary of several French tourists, despite its somewhat unreachable location.

Ms. Elida Dayse, 29, a very beautiful girl here, said: "We are always happy to welcome visitors even though none of us speak French." The fact that tourists married a girl in the town of Noiva do Cordeiro also really happened when nearly 20 years ago, a Chilean man visited and married a girl here.

Noiva do Cordeiro - where women rule

Nothing in Noiva do Cordeiro reflects the values of Brazil's new president.

In this world, neither violence nor religion are tolerated. No special treatment for higher-ups. Delina, the grandmother of the hamlet, is a quiet, unassuming woman.

Disputes are settled out of court in her community by mediation and lengthy discussions, rather than litigation. In this society, wage equality is a reality. With both modest and large investments, everyone pitches in where they can. Love of whatever gender or orientation is equally accepted.

Adults and sick or elderly people are cared after, and kids are looked for on a rotational basis. Everyone in the town eats at the large community house in the middle of the settlement multiple times a day. As they party, they light up cigarettes and dance.

Another resident, 49-year-old Rosalee Fernandes, said: "We have God in our hearts. But we don't think we need to go to church, get married in front of a priest or baptise our children. These are rules made up by men."

And - very different from the rest of the country - power lies in women ́s hands.

The origin of this female rule lies in the village ́s history. Towards the end of the 1950’s, a strict evangelical priest married the then 16-year-old Delina and established a rigid system: no music, no contraception, only long hair and clothes, several daily hours of praying and a womans word always less valid than a man’s.

It wasn't until the early 1990s that the ladies finally rose up and abandoned the despot. There was a mass exodus as people fled his all-male rule. They outlawed religion because they desired a community free from prohibition and a lifestyle characterized by kindness.

Matriarchal, socialist, and bottom-up democratic are arguably the best descriptors of the social order in Noiva do Cordeiro.

Yet, Noiva residents have no use for such concepts. Their guiding idea is love, which is both beautiful and utopian in its ring. The rest is logical.

"Men who come to town to find a partner also need to know that things are very different here. Husbands have to wash dishes, do laundry, cook, clean the toilets. We are equal," a girl in the town shared.

Conclusions

Until now, the town of Noiva do Cordeiro is still a very special place in the world because not only many women but also everyone aspire to get married.

There are even old people who have never kissed anyone. However, the single women here never feel self-deprecating or frustrated. Kaila Fernandes, 28, shared: "I never worry about this. I don't think much about marriage. I'm sure love will happen independently of this place. My love will come in right time".
