While playhouses are still closed, the National Theatre is bringing Shakespeare to our living rooms with its filmed version of Romeo & Juliet, starring The Crown‘s Josh O’Connor and Chernobyl’s Jessie Buckley.
The production was originally part of the National’s 2020 schedule but, like many theatre tours and musicals, all performances were cancelled due to COVID-19. However, director Simon Godwin adapted the play into a film, with the cast and crew using the National Theatre’s stage and surrounding areas as a set for the romantic tragedy, which was shot over three weeks in December.
Here’s everything you need to know about The National Theatre’s filmed version of Romeo & Juliet.

“Did my heart love till now?” The National Theatre has set its release date for its highly anticipated production of Romeo & Juliet! The film will be available to watch in the UK on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2021, while U.S. viewers can begin streaming on April 23.
The original production was meant to be staged in 2020 in London but has been postponed due to the pandemic. Now, the cast will assemble on the Lyttelton Theatre to film Shakespeare’s classic to share with at-home audiences to enjoy the work from the comfort of their homes. Romeo & Juliet will be released as an original film as part of National Theatre At Home on Sky Arts in the UK (available to watch on Freeview channel 11 and Freesat 147) and PBS in the US (check local listings), Thebroadwayblog noted.

The National Theatre’s Romeo & Juliet will premiere on Sky Arts in the UK, on April 4 (Easter Sunday), at 9 pm.
Sky Arts is a channel dedicated to culture, arts and music. It runs 24 hours a day and offers documentaries, movies, operas and more. Last year, Sky Arts became free-to-air, and it is available on Freeview Channel 11 and Freesat channel 147.
To get it (without a paid subscription), you would need access to either Freeview – with an aerial and a Freeview box (or TV with Freeview) – or to Freesat, with a satellite dish on your roof connected to a Freesat box.
While the linear, “live” version of Sky Arts is available for free, the channel’s on-demand content is only available via Sky or its streaming service, NOW (formerly NOW TV).
Therefore, viewers who want to watch the new film version of Romeo & Juliet beyond its live broadcast on Sunday, would need to either record it – or get a Sky / NOW Entertainment membership, Cordbusters cited.
