Snowpiercer Season 3: Release Date, Trailer, Cast and What to Expect

Snowpiercer, TNT's TV series adaptation of Bong Joon-ho's 2013 dystopian sci-fi thriller film of the same name (as well as the '80s graphic novel Le Transperceneige on which the film was based), wraps up its second season with an explosive two-part finale that airs Monday, March 29, at 9/8c on TNT, with the first half currently available to stream on TNT's app.

The finale is setting up a showdown between deposed revolutionary leader Andre Layton (Daveed Diggs) and Snowpiercer creator Mr. Wilford (Sean Bean), who has reassumed control of the never-stopping train that contains the remnants of humanity after an apocalyptic event. Wilford banished Layton to the supply train, "Big Alice," and is mulling over what to do about all the important Snowpiercer passengers who are still loyal to Layton. But one thing's for sure — to paraphrase The Walking Dead's Rick Grimes, Snowpiercer isn't a democracy anymore. Things don't look good for Layton and the revolution, but there is still hope in the form of Melanie Cavill (Jennifer Connelly), who is off the train looking for scientific evidence that the planet is becoming habitable again, and who may return to the train in the finale.

Snowpiercer Season 3: Release Date

Production on Snowpiercer season 3 is currently underway in Canada and is expected to be completed in July 2021.

The cast expected to return for Snowpiercer season 3 includes series leads Daveed Diggs and Sean Bean, Rowan Blanchard, Alison Wright, Lena Hall, Mickey Sumner, Sam Otto, Annalise Basso, and Steven Ogg, while Chelsea Harris was promoted to series regular and Archie Panjabi is joining the cast. After the shocking ending of Snowpiercer season 2, TVLine confirmed that Jennifer Connelly will also return for season 3 although Melanie Cavill was apparently killed off in the final episode.

TNT has not yet announced when Snowpiercer season 3 will premiere, but it's likely to be at some point in 2022. Season 1 premiered in May 2020 but the completion of season 2's production was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in season 2 premiering in January 2021. Snowpiercer season 3 arriving late in 2021 may not be completely out of the question.

Snowpiercer season 3 Cast

The early renewal means that we're still enjoying the season 2 journey, which means we're not yet aware of any surprise character deaths. But as long as the main cast aren't thrown off the train in the next few weeks, we fully expect everyone important to return.

That means Jennifer Connelly, Daveed Diggs, Sean Bean, Rowan Blanchard, Alison Wright, Mickey Sumner, Iddo Goldberg, Katie McGuinness, Lena Hall, Annalise Basso, Steven Ogg, Sam Otto, Roberto Urbina and Sheila Vand will all come back.

We do have confirmation of a new cast member though, with Deadline reporting Emmy winner Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife) has joined the team as a new series regular.

Panjabi will play Asha, but further character details are being held back for now.

Nothing has been publicly revealed about what will happen in season 3 of Snowpiercer yet, but based on where things stand at the current point in season 2, we can make a couple broad predictions. The fight with Mr. Wilford doesn't seem like it will be over at the end of this season — thankfully, as Sean Bean has energized Snowpiercer in a really rousing way, and we hope he sticks around for awhile — so the conflict between the democratic have-nots led by Layton and the authoritarian haves led by Wilford will only get more intense in season 3.

Our other prediction is that Melanie will find signs of life, and we'll start to see what happens as people try to get off the train and back into the natural world. Who knows what's out there. The possibilities for expansion off the Snowpiercer train feel boundless. As for other ideas of what could happen, fans could look to the source material of Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette's French graphic novels for ideas the show's writers might draw upon, said Looper.

It’s significantly early to expect a trailer or even a teaser as the second season is still underway. The future articles devoted to Snowpiercer will contain many more rumors and theories that readers should be aware of.

Snowpiercer Season 3 Story Details

Snowpiercer season 2 concluded with an epic cliffhanger where Andre Layton led a group of rebels to steal the first 10 cars of Snowpiercer, turning it into a pirate train. They set off for the Rocky Mountains to rescue Melanie only to find that she has apparently abandoned the refuge of the research station and ventured off into the frozen wilderness to die. However, Cavill left behind all of her data proving her theory that parts of the Earth are warming enough to colonize.

The ending of Snowpiercer season 2 set the stage for Layton and company to return to the Great Ark Train and take it back from Mr. Wilford. However that conflict shakes out will determine the future of the human race, but Snowpiercer season 3 could also result in Melanie's dream that "the future is outside" of the train coming true at last.
