Mother's Day: 11 Best Ways to Celebrate
Mother's Day is a celebration honoring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in the months of March or May.
When Is Mother’s Day?
Mother’s Day celebrates motherhood and is a day to make an extra-special effort to recognize and appreciate mothers’ roles in our lives. Often this day is extended to generations of mothers—grandmothers, great-grandmothers, stepmothers—as well as to mother figures.
In the United States, Mother’s Day is celebrated annually on the second Sunday in May. Although Mother’s Day is a national holiday widely observed in the U.S., it is not a federal or public holiday (when businesses are closed).
Ideas to celebrate
Complete a Home-Decor Project
If mom hasn’t had the time to hang that wallpaper, paint the powder room, or mount a gallery wall, volunteer yourself or make it a joint effort. The quality time spent and stunning results will be like two gifts in one.
Wrap a Bouquet
Of course a bunch of flowers are beautiful on their own. Adding a graphic wrapping paper and handwritten note make them heartfelt and extra special.
Get theater tickets
You can go to a play or a musical — lots of towns even host outdoor theater events. But if you're still leery about heading to a theater, there are places that let you stream plays and musicals in the comfort of your home, which lets you see shows with world-class casts for prices you'd never get if you'd bought tickets.
Spruce up the garden
Gardeners know that Mother's Day is the perfect time to start planting seeds. Get the whole family outside and digging in the dirt together. Every time she sees them, she'll be reminded of the special day — it's the gift that keeps on giving! Some flowers that are fairly easy to maintain include sunflowers, marigolds and sweet peas

Take an online cooking class
Get out of your comfort zone at an adventurous cooking class where the two of you can learn a new recipe together. Whether you're both seasoned home-cooks looking to try a new technique or beginners who are just starting out, there's a class that you'll both enjoy.
Get Outside and Garden
If you’ve got a green-thumbed mom, this Mother’s Day enjoy the warm May weather with a peaceful day of gardening. Head over to the nursery and stock up on her favorite florals—you can even spoil her with some new garden tools. And if all that planting works up an appetite, it’s the perfect excuse to enjoy lunch in the great outdoors.
Spend Sunday Morning at the Farmers’ Market
“In this busy, dynamic, fast-paced world, spending quality time as a mom is the biggest gift of all,” says designer Emilie Munroe of Studio Munroe. “How about a Sunday morning wandering the farmers’ market with the kids while searching for fresh produce and specialized breads and spreads? Head home and enjoy an hour listening to great music while preparing a fresh brunch treat together. Not only do you get to savor a healthy feast, but you make memories as a family at the same time. Just don’t forget the mimosas for mom!”
Throw a (Real or Virtual!) Tea Party
Mother's Day falls during that magical time of year when the weather is pleasantly warm (but not hot) and the trees and flowers are blooming, so why not move the party outside with a garden tea party—either together or remotely. Send along a snack-filled Country Living gift basket, or even better: Order one basket for yourself, and send one to her, and you can nibble on lemon shortbread cookies simultaneously from pretty al fresco settings, even if you can't be in the same place.
Sip "Mom"-osas at a Virtual Brunch
Get the family together from all corners of the country with a virtual happy hour. Send out a fun mimosa recipe in advance and call 'em "mom"-osas! If you want to elicit a chuckle, challenge each family member to show up to the "party" with a fun Zoom background. We prefer one of these dreamy Country Living scenes.
Take a Flower Arranging Class Together
The only thing better than getting a bouquet of flowers is creating your own! Spend some time together placing gorgeous blooms into creative arrangements by taking a virtual Mother's Day Master Class with Alice's Table.
Flip Through a Custom Photo Album
More time at home means more time to sort through family photos. Head to a site like Artifact Uprising or Shutterfly to create a custom photo album highlighting favorite moments together from the past—think family vacations, birthday parties, holidays, and more. Order a copy for yourself and your mom, then flip through it together in-person or on the phone and relive those blissful times. (Besides, aren't extra photos of grandkids exactly what she needs?)
