Congratulations to Italy, commiserations to England. England’s wait goes on; no trophy for their remarkable young squad, but they remain heroes all.

England LOSE Euro 2020 Final on penalties: Italy extend the Three Lions' 55 years of hurt with Rashford, Sancho and Saka missing from 12 yards like manager Gareth Southgate in 1996, breaking fans' hearts.

Despite the heroic efforts of Jordan Pickford, England missed three consecutive penalties crowning Italy champions in front of 60,000 fans at Wembley.

Nineteen-year-old Saka was consoled by Gareth Southgate, as penalties came back to haunt the manager again after his missed penalty at Euro 1996.

90 min ENGLAND 1-1 ITALY

Nerves are shredded at Wembley!

68. Italy really have a hold of this game now and England a struggling to get on the ball.

67 Min ENGLAND 1-1 ITALY

GOAL!

BONUCCI TAPS THE EQUALISER HOME!!!

England make a mess from the corner and Pickford pulls off a good save at the back post.

But the ball falls to the experienced Bonucci and the defender taps home the equaliser!

The corner’s flicked on at the near post. Verratti, on the left-hand corner of the six-yard box, tries to force home. Pickford turns onto the post. The ball pings back to Bonucci, who forces home from close range. This has been coming.

HALF TIME: Italy 0-1 England

Wembley erupts again as the referee blows for half-time. England haven’t done a great deal in attack since Luke Shaw’s dramatic early goal, truth be told, but then they don’t really need to, and they’ve looked comfortable at the back. A few things for Roberto Mancini to work out. England are 45 minutes from glory!

ENGLAND 1-0 ITALY

45. The fourth official holds his board up and there will be four minutes added on at the end of the first half.

35 min:

Shaw goes toe-to-toe with Di Lorenzo out wide on the left-hand side.

And the England man comes out on top with the ball.

Shaw tries to deliver a low cross towards the penalty spot, but Italy manage to clear.

Kane beats Chiellini to a header and suddenly Mount and Sterling are combining at speed down the inside-right channel. A crisp one-two on the edge of the box nearly opens Italy up, but Bonucci reads the danger well and intercepts.

Verratti shows his silky footwork to work the ball out wide to Insigne on the left-hand side.

The Napoli man then lays the ball down the line for Emerson on the overlap.

But the Chelsea left-back fails to deliver a good ball into the box.

And England have a goal-kick.

30 min: Italy string more passes together. It’s all good in the centre of the park, not so impressive whenever they try to advance into England’s final third. They’re not committing many men to their attacks. Not yet.

18 min: ENGLAND 1-0 ITALY

Italy have seen 51 per cent of the ball up to this point, but they haven't troubled England's backline.

Three Lions score inside three minutes!

GOAL!

SHAW THUMPS ENGLAND INTO THE LEAD!!!

Kane drives England forward before playing the ball wide to Trippier on the right-hand side.

The right-back touches the ball out of his feet before whipping an inch perfect cross towards the far post.

Shaw arrives and thumps the ball past Donnarumma!

England Team

Southgate has made one change for the starting match vs Italy.

Saka is the only player from the semi-final starting XI to miss out, with Kieran Trippier the man to come in.

And there is bad news for Phil Foden. The Manchester City man picked up a knock in training and has failed to make the bench.

The line-up sees Kyle Walker, Harry Maguire and John Stones across the back, with Trippier on the right of defence and Luke Shaw at left-back.

Jordan Pickford remains in goal.

England's own midfield gladiators Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips play in midfield.

In attack, Harry Kane leads the line.

And supporting him are Raheem Sterling and Mason Mount.

The shape of the XI is designed to counteract Italy's tactic of getting their full-backs down the wing.
