Sisters pray for the welfare of their brothers on this auspicious occasion to commemorate the sacred relationship between siblings. In the hopes that Lord Yama will grant their brothers a long life, sisters apply tilak to their foreheads and fasten the Raksha sutra around their wrists. The festival also includes the sweet custom of gift-giving to sisters to express their affection.
