How many seconds in 1 hour?
The answer is 3600.
We assume you are converting between second and hour.
We will discuss here about the conversion of seconds into hours. We know 1 second is equal to 1/3600 hour, which is required to convert the measuring time from seconds to hours.
What is a second (s or sec)?
A second is a unit of time. The symbol for second is s or sec. There are 3,600 seconds in an hour.
The second has historically been defined as 1/60 of a minute or 1/86,400 of a day. According the to SI definition, the second is the duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the unperturbed ground state of the caesium 133 atom.
The second is the SI base unit for time in the metric system. Seconds can be abbreviated as sec; for example, 1 second can be written as 1 sec.
What is an hour (hr)?
An hour is a unit of time. The symbol for hour is hr. There are 0.00027778 hours in a second.
The hour is a period of time equal to 1/24 of a day or 60 minutes.
The hour is an SI accepted unit for time for use with the metric system. Hours can be abbreviated as hr; for example, 1 hour can be written as 1 hr.
The fastest way to convert seconds to hours is to use this formula
hours = seconds ÷ 3,600
The time in hours is equal to the time in seconds divided by 3,600. Since there are 3,600 seconds in one hour, that's the conversion ratio used in the formula.
For example, here's how to convert 5,400 seconds to hours using the formula above.
5,400 sec = (5,400 ÷ 3,600) = 1.5 hr
How to Convert Seconds to Hours, Minutes & Seconds
The formula above can be used to find the hours in decimal form, but if you want to get hours, minutes and seconds, then follow these steps.
- Divide the seconds by 3,600 to get the total hours. Then, use the number to the left of the decimal point as the number of hours.
- Find the remaining seconds by multiplying the even hours found above by 3,600. Then, subtract that from the total seconds.
- Divide the remaining seconds by 60 to get the total number of remaining minutes. Then, use the number to the left of the decimal point as the number of minutes.
- Find the remaining seconds again by multiplying the even minutes found above by 60. Then, subtract that from the total seconds. This is the remaining seconds.
- Put the even number of hours, minutes, and remaining seconds into the form HH:MM:SS.
Seconds and hours are both units used to measure time. Keep reading to learn more about each unit of measure.

Dividing by 3,600
1.Determine the number of seconds you have. This information should be given, or it should be a figure you calculated yourself.
For example, you might be converting 2,400 seconds into hours.
2.Divide the number of seconds by 3,600. Note that there are 3,600 seconds in one hour.
So, if you have more than 3,600 seconds, your conversion will be greater than 1 hour. If you have less than 3,600 seconds, your conversion will be a fraction of an hour.
For example,
So, 2,400 seconds is equal to 0.6667 hours.
As another example, 5,600:3,600=1.5556 So, 5,600 seconds is equal to 1.5556 hours.
Converting Seconds to Minutes with a Table
1.Set up a table with two columns and two rows. Label the first row “seconds” and the second row “minutes.”
2.Write the unit rate in the first column. A unit rate is a rate with a denominator of 1. In this instance, you are comparing 1 minute to a number of seconds. 1 minute = 60 seconds. So, your unit rate is 60 seconds:1 minutes
To show this in the chart, write "60" in the top row of the first column, and write "1" in the bottom row of the first column.
3.Fill in the number of seconds you are converting. This value should go in the first row of the second column.
For example, if you are converting 9,000 seconds to hours, write “9,000” in the first row, second column of your table.
4.Determine the factor of change. In this instance, you are trying to find out how much the number of seconds you are converting changed from the number of seconds in the unit rate. To find the factor of change, divide the number of seconds you are converting by 60, the number of seconds in the unit rate. Note this factor, but do not write it in your chart.
5.Multiply the number of minutes by the factor of change. Since the number of minutes is only 1, you really only need to write down the result of the number of seconds divided by 60. This will show you the conversion of seconds to minutes.
6.Convert the number of minutes into hours. To do this, set up another conversion table, using minutes and hours instead of seconds and minutes. The unit rate is 60 minutes per 1 hour. Use the number of minutes you are converting, instead of the number of seconds, in this table.
For example, if you converted 9,000 seconds to 150 minutes, you are now converting 150 minutes to a number of hours. In your table, you need to find the factor of change from 60 minutes to 150 minutes. Since 150:60=2.5
Your factor of change is 2.5. Multiply this by 1 hour: 1x2.5=2.5
So 9,000 seconds=150mins=2.5 hours
How to Convert Seconds to Hours in Excel
1.Open your spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel. You'll usually find Excel in the All Apps area of the Start menu (Windows) or in the Applications folder (macOS).
2.Click an empty cell and type =. Use a cell in an empty column. This creates a new formula.
3.Click the cell that contains the seconds you want to convert. The cell's location (e.g., B4) now appears in the formula.
4.Type 86400. This tells Excel to divide the number of seconds by 86400.
86400 is 24 (hours in a day) X 60 (minutes in an hour) X 60 (seconds in a minute).
The formula should now look like this (using ″B4″ as the cell containing the number of seconds): =B486400.
To simply convert a value in seconds to a value in minutes, you can divide by 60 instead. To format the value as a time, though, use the 86,400 value and continue on to the next step.
5.Press ↵ Enter or ⏎ Return. The results of the formula will appear. The format may still appear funny, but you're about to fix that.
6.Right-click the letter above the column in which you entered the formula. For example, if you typed the formula in C4, right-click the C above the column. This selects the column and opens a menu.
7.Click Number Format. If you don't see this option, click Format then ""Cells"" or ""Format cells"", and then click the Number tab.
8.Click Time. It's under the ″Category″ header on the left side of the panel. A list of time formats will appear.
9.Select a time format. Since you're working with seconds, choose either 30.55.2 (popular in most countries) or 37:30:55 (popular in the US), as these formats display hours, minutes, and seconds.
10.Click OK. The seconds you converted to minutes now appear in the correct format.
