Amanda Gorman's moving Super Bowl poem honors three Americans for their work amid the pandemic

Her poem paid tribute to educator Trimaine Davis, nurse manager Suzie Dorner and Marine Corps veteran James Martin.

A video of Gorman performing her poem, "Chorus of the Captains," was played ahead of the three heroes' introduction on-field. The young poet has seen immense success in recent weeks following her inaugural poem, having been signed with IMG models just days later, as well as interviewed by Michelle Obama for Time Magazine.

Amanda Gorman, who also performed at Biden's inauguration, read her poem "Chorus of the Captains" ahead of the Super Bowl game.

Today we honor our three captains

For their actions and impact in

A time of uncertainty and need.

They've taken the lead,

Exceeding all expectations and limitations,

Uplifting their communities and neighbors

As leaders, healers, and educators.

James has felt the wounds of warfare,

But this warrior still shares

His home with at-risk kids.

During Covid, he's even lent a hand

Live-streaming football for family and fans.

Trimaine is an educator who works nonstop,

Providing his community with hotspots,

Laptops, and tech workshops,

So his students have all the tools

They need to succeed in life and in school.

Suzie is the ICU nurse manager at a Tampa Hospital.

Her chronicles prove that even in tragedy, hope is possible.

She lost her grandmothers to the pandemic,

And fights to save other lives in the ICU battle zone,

Defining the frontline heroes risking their lives for our own.

Let us walk with these warriors,

Charge on with these champions,

And carry forth the call of our captains!

We celebrate them by acting

With courage and compassion,

By doing what is right and just.

For while we honor them today,

It is they who every day honor us.

Who is Amanda Gorman?

In her short but already momentous career, the 22-year-old poet Amanda Gorman has accomplished a stunning series of firsts. At 19, she became the country’s first Youth Poet Laureate. Last month, when she recited her poem, “The Hill We Climb,” president Biden’s inauguration, she became the youngest inaugural poet in American history. And on Sunday, she became the first poet ever to perform for the Super Bowl, NT Times reported.

The Harvard graduate made history as the youngest-ever poet to recite at a presidential inauguration, but she’s been doing groundbreaking things her entire life.

According to The New York Times, Amanda was further inspired to dream big when she saw Pakistani activist and Nobel Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai's speech to the United Nations Youth Assembly in 2013. At the age of 16, Amanda herself became a youth delegate for the United Nations. Not long after, she was named the inaugural Los Angeles Youth Poet Laureate and published her collection of poems entitled "The One for Whom Food Is Not Enough." While studying sociology at Harvard, Amanda was named the first National Youth Poet Laureate.

As she chased her dreams, Amanda struggled with a speech impediment, NPR reports. In particular, the poet had a hard time saying the letter "R," which made her constantly have to "self-edit and self-police."

"I'd want to say, 'Girls can change the world,' but I cannot say so many letters in that statement," she told the outlet. "So I'd say things like 'Young women can shape the globe."
