Super Bowl 2021 preview

Who is in the Super Bowl 2021?

Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs.Kansas City Chiefs

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the 2020 NFC Champions, and will play Super Bowl 55 in Raymond James Stadium in two weeks. The Bucs will face the Kansas City Chiefs, who beat the Buffalo Bills to win the AFC Championship, shows DraftKings nation. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are defending their home turf against the Kansas City Chiefs in the much-awaited playoff rematch between Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes. While Kansas City will travel like normal, it will be a short trip for the Bucs as they are placing in the city they call home of Tampa, Florida.

This marks the first time the Buccaneers are in the Super Bowl since 2003 (the 2002 season), when the Jon Gruden-led Bucs beat the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl 37. For perspective, Gruden was 39 years young when he won that Super Bowl as the Buccaneers' head man. Brady will have a chance to win the 2021 game at 43.

Of course, this is the second consecutive appearance for the much younger Mahomes and the Chiefs, and Mahomes himself is making history as the youngest quarterback in NFL history to start two Super Bowls. Not bad.

Super Bowl 55 odds, line, spread

  • Opening spread: Kansas City Chiefs -3
  • Moneyline: Kansas City Chiefs -180; Tampa Bay Buccaneers +160
  • Over/under: 57.5

The Chiefs open as field-goal favorites over the Buccaneers. Vegas also expects this game to be high-scoring, with an over/under sitting slightly below 60 points. Depending on who is and isn't available for both sides, expect the numbers to move over the coming two weeks.

When & where is Super Bowl 55?

  • Date: Sunday, Feb. 7
  • Kickoff time: 6:30 p.m. ET (unofficial)
  • TV network: CBS
  • Location: Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, Fla.

The Buccaneers are vying for a Lombardi Trophy for the first time since 2003, and they'll be able to sleep in their own beds as they prepare: The Bucs are playing in their home stadium, Raymond James Stadium, in Tampa, Fla.

Given its warm climate, Florida is a popular state for Super Bowl showdowns: Last year, Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens hosted Super Bowl 54, according to sportingnews.

How did they get here?

The Chiefs are no strangers to the Super Bowl, having won it just last season. But this year, they were arguably even more dominant, seemingly going half-speed en route to a 14-2 finish, with Patrick Mahomes returning to the MVP race to help Kansas City lock up the AFC's No. 1 seed. With an opportunistic defense under Steve Spagnuolo and an offense loaded with the league's most reliably explosive weapons -- from Mahomes to Tyreek Hill to Travis Kelce to, heck, even Mecole Hardman -- they fended off a feisty Browns team in the divisional round despite a late head injury to Mahomes, then cruised past the Bills at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday night, claiming their second AFC title in as many seasons.

The Buccaneers haven't played on Super Sunday since Brad Johnson, Mike Alstott, Simeon Rice, Derrick Brooks and John Lynch were starring on their team back in 2002. But this year, unlike any other before, they had Tom Brady. At 43, Brady hasn't been perfect, but he's certainly still been dropping dimes, carrying momentum from a 40-touchdown regular season, when Tampa Bay went 11-5 in its second year under coach Bruce Arians, into the playoffs. After edging Washington in the wild-card round and then riding a big defensive showing over the Saints in New Orleans, the Bucs outdid Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay to claim the NFC title, with Brady throwing deep early and often to give Tampa a two-score lead that the Packers could never surmount.

What happened when they last played?

The Chiefs and Buccaneers met earlier this season -- in Week 12, to be exact. When the two sides clashed then, on Nov. 29, the Chiefs went up big early on, taking a 17-0 lead as Tyreek Hill exploded past Tampa Bay's secondary, but the Bucs pulled within three in the fourth quarter thanks to some of Brady's own magic. Ultimately, Andy Reid and Co. sealed the victory, 27-24.

Who's favored to win?

The reigning champion Chiefs are currently slight favorites in Super Bowl LV, with William Hill Sportsbook have Kansas City as 3-point favorites ahead of Feb. 7's championship.

And here's the latest from SportsLine stats specialist Stephen Oh:

Have a feeling that we may have Kansas City as a slightly higher favorite after the stats from Sunday are processed, but the initial forecast has the Chiefs as a 55 percent favorite to beat Tampa Bay with an average sim score of Chiefs 28, Buccaneers 26.

Super Bowl halftime show 2021

The Weeknd will be performing at halftime at Super Bowl 55, and yes that's spelled correctly.

Abel Makkonen Tesfaye is a Canadian singer-songwriter known as The Weeknd. He'll be following up a Super Bowl 54 halftime show that featured Shakira and Jennifer Lopez. The Weeknd is a three-time Grammy winner with a wide array of songs to choose from that hit a number of genres, from upbeat pop songs to mellower R&B tunes.

The Weeknd's three Grammy wins are:

Best Urban Contemporary Album: Beauty Behind The Madness (2016)

Best R&B Performance: Earned It (2016)

Best Urban Contemporary Album: Starboy (2018)

Sporting News' Joe Rivera broke down the ideal setlist for The Weeknd when the news was announced. Here's a look at the songs The Weeknd should perform.

Super Bowl national anthem singer 2021

The NFL announced on Jan. 19 that the national anthem singers at Super Bowl 55 will be Eric Church and Jazmine Sullivan. Church is a highly acclaimed country artist, while Sullivan has been a fixture of R&B charts as a top-notch vocalist.

As part of the pregame festivities, there'll also be a rendition of America the Beautiful. That'll be sung by H.E.R., another R&B artist who's received 13 Grammy nominations over the past three years.
