“I’ll Be Missing You,” by Puff Daddy and Faith Evans is the No. 1 hit on Billboard‘s Greatest of All Time Songs of the Summer chart, as the 500-position recap of more than six decades of sizzling summer smashes makes its debut in the charts menu of Billboard.com.

The all-star collaboration, an ode to the late Notorious B.I.G. (Evans’ husband), ruled the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 11 weeks in 1997, wrapping as that summer‘s biggest song.

According to Evans, “Puff said he wanted to make the biggest tribute record that’s ever been done.”

The single interpolates The Police’s “Every Breath You Take” — itself the top summer hit of 1983, when it dominated the Hot 100 for eight frames, and the No. 7 title on the Greatest of All Time Songs of the Summer chart.

Billboard‘s Greatest of All Time Songs of the Summer chart is based on titles’ performance on the Hot 100 during the annual tracking period of Memorial Day through Labor Day. The chart utilizes an inverse point system for 1959 (the Hot 100’s first full summer, following its Aug. 4, 1958, inception) through 1991 (the final summer prior to the advent of MRC Data information), with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at No. 100 earning the least. From 1992 through 2020, the recap incorporates point totals accumulated from radio airplay, sales and, subsequently, streaming data included in the Hot 100’s methodology. Additionally, years were weighted to account for varying chart turnover rates throughout the Hot 100’s history.

I'll Be Missing You

Sean Combs, Faith Evans

Yeah, this right here (tell me why)

Goes out, to everyone, that has lost someone

That they truly loved (c'mon, check it out)

Seems like yesterday we used to rock the show

I laced the track, you locked the flow

So far from hangin' on the block for dough

Notorious, they got to know that

Life ain't always what it seem to be (uh-uh)

Words can't express what you mean to me

Even though you're gone, we still a team

Through your family, I'll fulfill your dream (that's right)

In the future, can't wait to see

If you open up the gates for me

Reminisce some time, the night they took my friend (uh-huh)

Try to black it out, but it plays again

When it's real, feelings hard to conceal

Can't imagine all the pain I feel

Give anything to hear half your breath (half your breath)

I know you still living your life, after death

Every step I take, every move I make

Every single day, every time I pray

I'll be missing you

Thinkin' of the day, when you went away

What a life to take, what a bond to break

I'll be missing you

It's kinda hard with you not around (yeah)

Know you in Heaven smilin' down

Watchin' us while we pray for you

Every day we pray for you

'Til the day we meet again

In my heart is where I'll keep you friend

Memories give me the strength I need (uh-huh) to proceed

Strength I need to believe

My thoughts big I just can't define (can't define)

Wish I could turn back the hands of time

Us in the six, shop for new clothes and kicks

You and me taking flicks

Makin' hits, stages they receive you on

Still can't believe you're gone (can't believe you're gone)

Give anything to hear half your breath (half your breath)

I know you still living you're life, after death

Every step I take, every move I make (ohh, I'll miss you)

Every single day, every time I pray

I'll be missing you (yeah, yeah, yeah)

Thinkin' of the day, when you went away

What a life to take, what a bond to break

I'll be missing you

Somebody tell me why

One black morning

When this life is over

I know

I'll see your face

Every night I pray

Every step I take

Every move I make

Every single day

Every night I pray

Every day that passes (every step I take)

Is a day that I get closer (every move I make)

To seeing you again (every single day)

We miss you B.I.G. (every night I pray)

And we won't stop (every step I take)

'Cause we can't stop (every move I make)

That's right (every single day)

Every night I pray (we miss you)

Every step I take (we miss you)

Every move I make (we miss you)

We miss you B.I.G. (we miss you)

Every single day

Every step I take, every move I make (ohh, I'll miss you)

Every single day, every time I pray

I'll be missing you (yeah, yeah, yeah)

Thinkin' of the day, when you went away

What a life to take, what a bond to break

I'll be missing you

Every step I take, every move I make

Every single day, every time I pray

I'll be missing you (I'll be missing you)

Thinkin' of the day (thinking of the day), when you went away

What a life to take, what a bond to break

I'll be missing you

Every step I take, every move I make (one black morning)

(When this life is over)

Every single day, every time I pray (I know)

I'll be missing you (I'll see your face)

Thinkin' of the day, when you went away (one black morning)

(When this life is over)

What prompted the creation of “I’ll Be Missing You” was the death of a popular rapper, the Notorious B.I.G. (1972-1997), during March of 1997. Technically speaking Diddy was B.I.G.’s label boss. But for all intents and purposes they were more along the lines of musical partners – a hip-hop version of Hall & Oates, if you will. Or stated otherwise they were friends whose career trajectories into superstardom were intertwined. So logically speaking, Notorious’s death had a profound impact on Diddy. And accordingly, since Biggie is the intended recipient of the lyrics, the wording of the song reflects that reality as well as, to a lesser extent, their personal history together.

But as stated in the intro, Diddy is not only dedicating the track to B.I.G. Rather the sentiments expressed are on behalf of “everyone that has lost someone”, i.e. a loved one who has passed away. And what the vocalist(s) is saying conclusively, as the title suggests, is that he will always miss the addressee. So simply put, Diddy comes off as someone who is coming to grips with the departure of a close friend. And in doing so, he is telling said individual that he is looking forward to meeting him again in the afterlife.

This song actually came out as part of the first (and only) album from Puff Daddy & The Family, which is entitled “No Way Out”. The Family were an informal collective of rappers (Mase, The LOX and Black Rob) who were signed under P. Diddy’s Bad Boy Records at the time.

Faith Evans is a three-time platinum-certified R&B artist and widow of "The Notorious B.I.G."

With her powerful, honeyed soprano and talent for songwriting and record production, Faith Evans is one of R&B's all-time greats, despite her name forever being linked to hip hop through her association with Bad Boy Records and her marriage to the rap legend, the Notorious B.I.G. Evans became known as the First Lady of Bad Boy after Sean "Puffy" Combs signed her to his influential label in 1994. The same year, Evans married Christopher Wallace — aka the Notorious B.I.G. — and found herself at the center of the bitter East Coast/West Coast rap rivalry, which would claim the lives of Wallace and his great rival, Tupac Shakur, in 1996-97.
