Champions League Qualifying: Playoff Round

Six tickets to the lucrative group stage will be on the line in the playoff round. Four berths will come from the Champions Path, while two teams will come from the League Path.

In the Champions Path, seeding is not yet confirmed as it depends which teams from which nations emerge from the previous round. UEFA coefficient will be used to determine which two unknown teams achieve seeded status, while three teams will join Trabzonspor as unseeded clubs.

How do Champions League qualifying & playoff rounds work?

Before the highly-publicized Champions League group stage, there are two preliminary rounds, four qualifying rounds, and one playoff round for teams to progress through, hoping to reach the popular and lucrative group stage.

While 26 teams have already confirmed places in the group stage for the 2022/23 competition, there are still six spots available for teams that progress through the qualifying and playoff rounds.

Placement of teams within each phase is determined by UEFA's country coefficient, which is a mathematical formula that accounts for the finishing position of teams from that league in European competitions over the previous five years.

There are two coefficients to consider: league coefficient and club coefficient. As previously explained, league coefficient measures the overall achievements of a whole league in European competition, used for determining how many teams from each league qualify to the competition and what round of competition they enter. Club coefficient, meanwhile, is used to determine which teams in each round of competition are seeded for the draw and which teams are unseeded.

The second qualifying round introduces a Champions Path and a League Path, which are both constructed as they sound. The Champions Path includes all teams that qualified for the competition by winning their domestic league, while the League Path includes teams that qualified by domestic table finish but did not earn a league title.

When do the knock-out stages of the Champions League start?

The 2022/23 Champions League round of 16 begins on February 14 and runs until February 22, with the return fixtures scheduled between March 7 and 15.

The competition’s quarter-final first legs will take place on April 11 and 12, while the second legs fall on April 18 and 19.

May 9 and 10 are booked for the semi-finals’ first legs, with the return games scheduled for May 16 and 17.

When and where is the Champions League final in 2023?

The 2022/23 Champions League showpiece, scheduled to take place at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul on June 10, will be the second final held at the home of the Turkish national team.

The same venue played host to the iconic 2005 decider between Liverpool and AC Milan when the Reds came from a 3-0 half-time deficit to lift the title after a penalty shoot-out.

UEFA’s decision to hand the Ataturk Olympic Stadium the privilege to host the famous event comes as a settlement for the 2020 Covid-related incident.

Despite being initially selected to host the 2020 decider, Istanbul had to hand over hosting rights to Lisbon due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A year later, they surrendered rights to stage the grand final to Porto as part of UEFA’s bid to allow fans of the finalists to attend the most significant fixture in a European club season.
