Who is Jung Ho-yeon in Squid Game?
Jung Ho -yeon plays a North Korean defector named Sae-byeok. She gets by as a pickpocket and enters the bloody contest out of desperation like the other players, as she needs a huge sum of money to reunite with her brother who’s staying in an orphanage, and her mum who’s still stuck in their home country.
Though Kang Sae-byeok, player 067, dies during the games, she’s still able to help her brother. Seong locates him a year after the games, taking him out of the orphanage and uniting him with Cho’s mother—who has unknowingly lost her son.
Seong then vows to destroy the organization that had forced players to do what he and Kang determined to be wrong: exploit self-interest and treat players like horses.
Despite being one of the younger players in the game, she’s full of guarded walls, adding to the mystery of how she ends up there.

Jung was able to connect, too, with Kang Sae-byeok's loneliness in a foreign country. "In 2016, I left Korea to further my modelling career overseas, and I spent a lot of time alone. At the time, the emotion that I felt the most was 'loneliness'," she told W Korea. "That feeling of loneliness while trying to persevere and live isn’t all that different (from Sae-byeok's experience)."

Jung revealed that she was at New York Fashion Week when she was asked to send in a video audition for Squid Game.
At the start of 2020, she joined the newly established Saram Entertainment agency in Korea as an actress while maintaining her modelling career. With her management's encouragement, she decided to audition for Squid Game by sending in a self-taped video from New York, around the time of fashion week.
"I remember how I spent all my time reading the script apart from when I ate food. I sent the video in, and the director contacted me, asking me to meet in person. So I dropped everything and flew in right away," she said.
She also recalled her reaction to learning that she had been cast in the show.
"When my CEO told me I’d been casted, the first thing I said was, 'Why?' I was so happy when I heard the news, but it was like a greater fear had taken over me. [I was like] ‘Thank you very much, but I can do this?'"
