The postponed 2020 European Championships will see some of the greatest goal scorers in world football fight it out for the Golden Boot.

The prize for the tournament's top scorer is always fiercely contested - with the best European sharpshooters looking to add to their tallies to be crowned the continent's No 1 goalscorer.

Here is a list of candidates for ‘Euro 2020 Golden Boot’.

1.Harry Kane-England

Kane is looking to add to his 34 England goals and he could conceivably overtake Michael Owen’s international record (40) in the process.

Kane was also top scorer during the qualifying stages, scoring 12 times in just eight games including trebles at home to both Bulgaria and Montenegro.

2.Kylian Mbappe-France

France star Kylian Mbappe is 8/1 (9.0) to live up to his star potential by scooping the Euro 2020 Golden Boot.

Injury meant he only played in five of Les Bleus’ 10 qualifying matches but he still scored in three of those to add to the four he netted during the 2018 World Cup-winning campaign.

3.Romelu Lukaku-Belgium

Lukaku found his golden touch in front of goal for Inter last season and we expect that to continue at Euro 2020. With service from Kevin De Bruyne and (if fit!) Eden Hazard, a lot of chances will be falling his way. It’s hard to see Divock Origi or Christian Benteke competing for a place in the Red Devils line-up so, crucially, he will likely play every minute of every game.

Lukaku was joint-second with Antoine Griezmann, Kylian Mbappe, Cristiano Ronaldo and Denis Cheryshev (four goals) behind England’s Kane (six) in the race for the 2018 World Cup Golden Boot.

4.Cristiano Ronaldo-Portugal

Six goals and a Golden Boot win could have even greater implications for Ronaldo, who can match Ali Daei (109) as international football’s greatest goalscorer of all time.

5.Ciro Immobile-Italy

After missing the most recent World Cup, Italy are considered among the dark horses, though their chances will be boosted by Immobile, who scored 20 goals for Lazio this term.

Who are the underdogs to win the Euro 2020 Golden Boot?

Karim Benzema is 16/1 (17.0) to mark his comeback to the French national team with the Golden Boot.

The Real Madrid forward has been exiled since 2015, but 29 club goals this season earned him a recall as Les Bleus look to add Euro 2020 to their trophy cabinet.

Memphis Depay enjoyed his best scoring season since 2015 and is 20/1 (21.0) to translate that over to international football.

His 20 strikes were second to only Mbappe’s 27 in Ligue 1 this term, while three goals in his last five for the Netherlands make him a strong dark horse in the betting.

Arguably one of the best attackers in the world, Robert Lewandowski is 20/1 (21.0) to extend his outrageous scoring streak into Euro 2020.

The Polish striker scored an incredible 41 times in 29 Bundesliga games, although his record of two goals in 11 major tournament matches does not make for good reading.

Who are the outsiders to win the Euro 2020 Golden Boot?

At 25/1 (26.0) is Antoine Griezmann, who is the Golden Boot holder after scoring six goals at Euro 2016. Five of those six came in the knockout stages, but the emergence of Mbappe and return of Benzema mean the Barcelona man may find it difficult to come by as much success this time around.

Spain forward Alvaro Morata is 25/1 (26.0) after netting 20 times for Juventus this season, which is his best return at club level since 2016-17.

Ciro Immobile has been exceptional for Lazio over the last five years, scoring 150 times in just 219 appearances, and is also 25/1 (26.0) to win Golden Boot at Euro 2020.

Does the Golden Boot winner always reach the final?

Naturally, the further a team progresses in the tournament, the greater the chance their goalscorers have of clinching the Golden Boot. That puts Kane right among the favourites, with England expected to make a deep run at a tournament, which is scheduled to conclude in London.

The European Championships were expanded to accommodate 24 teams in 2016 and Uefa are sticking with that format this time around. That means there will again be a knockout fixture before the quarter-finals, and the finalists will have to play seven matches in total. That is one more than in 2012, when a remarkably low tally of three goals was enough to clinch the Golden Boot for Fernando Torres.

Yes, the last three Golden Boot winners made it all the way to the final, but every side will play at least three matches in the group stages. Savo Milosevic, who shared the Golden Boot with Patrick Kluivert in 2000, only reached the quarter-finals with Yugoslavia that year, scoring four of his five goals before the knockout stages began.
