On paper, only a few teams can match the quality that Gareth Southgate has at his disposal. England have never a tournament since the 1966 World Cup, and while they came close in 1996, it was Gareth Southgate's missed penalty that saw them get eliminated. The England boss will see the Euro 2020 as the perfect opportunity for redemption, and with the sizable amount of depth and talent in his squad, anything less than a semi-final finish would be disappointing. The Three Lions have a favourable group and should progress with ease, having been drawn with beaten World Cup finalists Croatia, rivals Scotland and the Czech Republic.

WHICH SEVEN PLAYERS ARE AT RISK OF BEING CUT FROM ENGLAND’S EURO 2020 SQUAD?

As per tournament regulations, Southgate has to name three goalkeepers. Jordan Pickford and Dean Henderson are certain of their spots while Sam Johnstones should get the nod ahead of Aaron Ramsdale for the third-choice role. Nick Pope required knee surgery which caused him to miss out.

A total of four right-backs and six centre-backs are in the provisional squad so expect the likes of Ben Godfrey and Ben White to drop out while Trent Alexander-Arnold’s place in under threat.

Jesse Lingard, Bukayo Saka and Ollie Watkins could also be among the group of seven not to make the final cut.

On the fitness front, Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire was only on the bench for the Europa League final due to an ankle ligament problem. However, club team-mate Mason Greenwood has been forced to withdraw due to an underlying injury. Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has been absent since February because of a groin injury and has only recently resumed light training. Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips hobbled out of their final-day win against West Brom with a potential shoulder problem.

The unlucky players that miss out on the 26-man party could earn a late reprieve if any injuries or illnesses occur before the tournament.

Injury cloud over Maguire, Henderson and Alexander-Arnold

Gareth Southgate, however, has to wade through an injury crisis with question marks on the fitness of key players. As per the latest England team news Euro 2020, Manchester United captain Harry Maguire suffered damage to his ankle in May and has played since, while Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is yet to make an appearance since February 20. Both players are key in imposing Southgate's vision on the pitch and any game missed by the duo will be a huge challenge for the Three Lions boss.

Kalvin Phillips, who is expected to be an understudy for Henderson, is also battling a shoulder injury. Trent Alexander-Arnold was subbed off in the friendly against Austria after suffering a thigh injury, and his campaign is in serious doubt. Southgate has the likes of Ben White, Ben Godfrey, James Ward-Prowse, Ollie Watkins and Jesse Lingard as stand players for the England squad for Euro 2020.

England manager - Gareth Southgate

Southgate must prove he is more than a pleasant ambassador and elite waistcoat model in Euro 2020. He’s had plenty of time to cultivate a tremendous crop of English talents, now it’s time to make a genuine charge at winning something.

He boasts plenty of attacking weapons and there will be a lot of pressure on him to extract plenty of goals from them, rather than playing safe, cautious football.

England Euro 2020 Key Players

Harry Kane

While much of the pre-tournament hype will revolve around Phil Foden and Mason Mount as England’s young guns, Kane is very much the main man, with the expectations of the nation resting on his shoulders.

Kane is an elite natural striker – arguably only bettered by Robert Lewandowski in terms of the world’s best – and he will lead the line straight through the middle.

Everything will run through, and by, Kane. He will drop deep and operate in a playmaker role at times, but his main focus should always be to stay high up the field and allow England’s creative brains to do the work behind him.

England Euro 2020 Predictions

For football to come home, England will need to be brave and bold. They will need to lean into their attacking talents as opposed to playing a more reserved style that many fear Southgate will opt for.

If Southgate goes with a back four and uses the likes of fearless Foden in support of Kane, the Three Lions have every chance of a deep run.

The biggest hurdle will be the Round of 16, where England could face Portugal, France or Germany. Don’t be surprised if they leave the competition at that stage, but if they can find a way through, a path to the final could well open up for them.

Prediction: Runners up

Euro 2020 groups

Group A: Italy, Switzerland, Turkey, Wales

Group B: Belgium, Russia, Denmark, Finland

Group C: Ukraine, Netherlands, Austria, North Macedonia

Group D: England, Croatia, Czech Republic, Scotland

Group E: Spain, Poland, Sweden, Slovakia

Group F: Germany, France, Portugal, Hungary

Last 16 knockout stage

This is where England's gameplan becomes a lot more interesting.

Gareth Southgate might even prefer to avoid a potential last-16 meeting with one of Portugal, Germany, France or Hungary, who lie in wait if the Three Lions win Group D.

If England finish second in their group, they will likely face an on-paper easier opponent in the next round - the runner-up from Group E, meaning one of Spain, Sweden, Poland or Slovakia.

There are three potential outcomes if England finish third in Group D but still qualify.

Depending on which other groups have three qualifiers, there are 10 possible combinations for the overall last-16 line-ups.

Five of those possible combinations - and statistically the most likely - would see England facing the winner of Group C (containing Netherlands, Ukraine, Austria and North Macedonia), three playing the winner of Group E (containing Spain, Sweden, Poland and Slovakia), and only two against the winner of Group B (containing Denmark, Finland, Belgium and Russia).
