'Coming 2 America' on Amazon Prime: Schedule, Casts, Where to Watch

Amazon Studios has confirmed that it has acquired worldwide rights to the keenly anticipated sequel “Coming 2 America” from Paramount Pictures, and has set a March 5, 2021 date to launch on Amazon Prime Video.
“Coming 2 America” is produced by Paramount Pictures in association with New Republic Pictures, and Eddie Murphy Productions and Misher Films. The screenplay is written by Kenya Barris, Barry W. Blaustein and David Sheffield, with story by Barry W. Blaustein, David Sheffield and Justin Kanew, based on characters created by Murphy. The producers are Kevin Misher and Murphy, executive producers are Brian Oliver, Bradley Fischer, Valerii An, Kenya Barris, Charisse Hewitt-Webster, Michele Imperato Stabile and Andy Berman.
The project is one of several that Paramount has sold this year to streamers, including Aaron Sorkin’s “Trial of the Chicago 7” and the action-comedy “Lovebirds,” both of which went to Netflix. The studio sold “Without Remorse” to Amazon.
When will Coming 2 America be launched?
Look for it Friday, March 5, 2021. Coming 2 America will be available to watch with a Prime Video membership. You can subscribe to Prime Video for $9 per month or opt for Amazon's general Prime membership, which includes a subscription to Prime Video, for $13 per month or $119 per year, according to Haper's Bazaar.
The flick was originally slated for a theatrical release from Paramount, but the studio sold the film to Amazon Studios in the fall in a whopping $125 million deal, Deadline reported. The original Coming to America is available on Prime to buy or rent to hold fans over in the meantime.

A new poster for Coming 2 America, the sequel to 1988's Coming to America, has arrived courtesy of Amazon Studios. This new poster not only features the movie's star, Eddie Murphy but reminds us of all the major cast and characters joining the sequel. With Coming 2 America set to hit Amazon Prime Video in March, we've been getting plenty of eye-popping looks at the highly anticipated comedy sequel. Recently, we were treated to the first teaser trailer for Coming 2 America, which showed audiences the reason Zamunda's Prince Akeem (Murphy) has to go back to New York City more than 30 years after he first visited the Big Apple, noted Collider.
The newest poster for Coming 2 America spotlights Prince Akeem but also makes room to showcase the supremely star-studded cast. As you look around, you'll see Arsenio Hall, Shari Headley, James Earl Jones, Wesley Snipes, Tracy Morgan, Leslie Jones, KiKi Layne, Jermaine Fowler, and Teyana Taylor. All of the actors are in character, naturally, and they're even wearing their gorgeous costumes made by Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter. The poster leaves you with the impression that Coming 2 America will focus even more on the collision of two worlds — Zamunda and New York City — and the ensuing culture clash. Of course, it will no doubt be a fun clash if it involves Murphy and Hall as our main duo.

Unfortunately for those hoping to see the real Queens of the 21st century up on the screen, I have bad news: Coming 2 America was filmed in Atlanta, Georgia, on the Tyler Perry Studio sound stages beginning in August 2019, Decider cites.
It is not uncommon for movies that take place in New York City to film in another city that is both cheaper and more accessible for production. It seems that’s the route director Craig Brewer opted to take with Coming 2 America. But never fear, because a little Hollywood magic can go a long way.
In an interview for the film’s press notes, the production designer Jefferson Sage said, “There’s enough of a complex of streets and buildings in Atlanta that gave us the core of what New York would be. Because we don’t spend a great deal of time in Queens in this movie, we had enough infrastructure to do some street setups. And when we created interiors on stage, we were careful about finding views out of the windows that were New York-oriented.”
And viewers can look forward to a new and improved royal palace in Zamunda, too. “We didn’t set out to recreate the first palace, so much as reinvent it,” Sage said in that same interview. “We referenced it in certain exterior scenes and used digital effects to create specific looks that might be familiar to fans. And inside, we created the statue of the King and each of the paintings on the walls that represent past leaders. Producer Kevin Misher had a great idea to make some of the paintings look like Eddie, as Akeem, too, so the lineage is clear.”
| Murphy talked with ET recently about letting his daughter start acting professionally for the film, quoted ET. "I told her that she couldn't work until she was 18, but she started acting lessons, she was doing an acting school and stuff for maybe two years before that," the actor and proud dad recalled. "The role was her age, it was somebody her age, so I was like, 'Mmkay, this is your age, you can go up for this.' So she auditioned for it and got the part." "I was very nervous," his daughter, Bella, admitted. "You know, I didn't want people to, you know, think that I was just doing this because I can or you know, I didn't want people to watch it and be like, 'Oh, that's his daughter because she can't keep up with everyone,' you know?" |
