'1899': Release Date, Cast, Plot and Teaser
|A scene in "1899"|
"1899", is now in production, and the scale is even bigger and the production more ambitious than the previous Netflix's epic German sci-fi series, "Dark".
1989 - Release Date
. 1899 is expected to arrive on Netflix in late 2021 but a release date is yet to be confirmed.
1899 the series has been in development since 2018, but while it’s been a long time coming, the wait is almost over. Production has officially begun, and 1899 has a unique method of making its 122-year-old world a reality: it’s being filmed in a soundstage with an LED backdrop run with Unreal Engine.
If that sounds familiar, it’s because it’s the same technology currently used to film The Mandalorian. It’s a state-of-the-art filmmaking method designed to make production easier as it doesn’t require extensive location shoots; the locations can just be rendered and projected.
“You literally take post-production and make it pre-production,” creator Baran bo Odar told Deadline. “Everything has to be decided beforehand, you have to create it, build it, so it’s all ready to shoot in-camera.”
While filming is just starting now, then, the process is much further along than it would be if it were filmed traditionally.
1989 - Teaser
While not a trailer, Netflix unveiled a small teaser of the upcoming series in May 2021. You can watch the first, really rather atmospheric teaser trailer for the series. Looks like the creative powers behind Dark are about to mess with our heads all over again. We wouldn’t expect anything more substantial for a while, as production has just begun, according to Whats-on-netflix.
The drama features a large, multilingual ensemble cast, all of whom will converse on-screen in their own respective mother tongues.
The pan-European cast includes: Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, Miguel Bernardeau, Maciej Musial, Lucas Lynggaard Tonnesen, Rosalie Craig, Clara Rosager, Maria Erwolter, Yann Gael, Mathilde Ollivier, José Pimentao, Isabella Wei, Gabby Wong, Jonas Bloquet, Fflyn Edwards, Alexandre Willaume and Anton Lesser, according to RadioTimes.
As the title suggests, 1899 is set in the last year of the 1800s.
“The passengers, a mixed bag of European origins, [are] united by their hopes and dreams for the new century and their future abroad. But their journey takes an unexpected turn when they discover another migrant ship adrift on open sea. What they will find on board, will turn their passage to the promised land into a horrifying nightmare,” according to HITC.
