TikTok is full of all kinds of hacks and trends, especially when it comes to skincare and beauty tips. People are paying so much attention to the recommendations from the app’s users, their influence can even reignite interest in products that were released years ago. And while many of the cosmetics, tools and practices are helpful, some of them are downright bizarre.

For those at the *ahem* far end of the millennial spectrum, TikTok, a microcosm as weird as it is addictive, is an app where people share short videos of themselves lip-syncing, dancing, and creating skits and other content we’re not too sure how to explain – most confusing of which are all the weird beauty trends.

What Are The Weirdest Tik Tok Beauty Trends?

1. Get dimples

If you thought the internet’s love of freckles had reached ridiculous heights, you should see its love of dimples. The dimple trend began with the ‘dimple challenge’, i.e. people showing off their dimples, which led to people drawing fake ones on… which then snowballed into people literally damaging their faces to get actual dimples.

Apparently, if you rub the end of a pen on your cheek vigorously enough, it will cause breakage within the muscle to leave a small ridge. We’ll pass on testing this one out.

2. Nose blush

It became clear soon into 2021 that masks weren't going anywhere.

Noses stayed hidden in many situations: covered in cloth while traveling on public transport and out running errands. Some more than others appeared to have missed this central facial feature: cue the meteoric rise of nose blush.

Dabbing or slathering hot pink blush onto the base of your nose was a makeup trend no one could have predicted. It first began on TikTok as part of the app's defining E-Girl look -- an internet subculture characterized by heavy eyeliner, thick brows and usually a faux heart-shaped freckle.

3. Snail skin care

Snail mucin – the protein-rich, mucinous secretion that comes from the snail’s slime glands – has long been a popular ingredient in K-beauty for its skin-brightening properties.

This year, TikTok seems to be taking the wind with snail mucin as a holy grail product. Corsx, a snail slime skincare maker, has their own hashtag on TikTok with 3 million views. Google searches for their “Cosrx Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence” product have turned up 140% this year, too.

But users have found a cheaper way to get their hands on this beauty thing: straight from the snail.

Some TikTokkers start out placing the snails directly on their faces and let them inched toward the surface, before massaging the glitter into their skin. Many have realized that their giant African snail pet can double as a home beauty treatment, while others roll up their sleeves and harvest common garden snails.

4. Yassification

In fact, perhaps the most amazing beauty trend of 2021 has almost nothing to do with our actual faces. Technically “Yassification” meme born on Twitter, after someone posted two images side-by-side: a screenshot of actor Toni Collette from the 2018 horror film “Hereditary,” and the same screenshot after a few rounds of FaceApp tweaks.

Collette’s round mouth was still horrifying, only now it was adorned with bright red lipstick. The disconnect between the setting (“Hereditary” is a scary movie) and the altered subject matter (Collette looks like a digitally decorated influencer) was what caused the original meme to go viral. like a forest fire.

Now, yassification has moved to TikTok, where users mock the intelligent retouching software that renders their faces unrecognizable through AI-generated layers of airfoil, lip lining, and hair thickening.

A dystopian drama full of gore, sweat and masks may not seem like a natural source of beauty inspiration, but the surprise Netflix hit "Squid Game" -- about a contest in which players compete in children's games with life-or-death stakes -- pulled it off.

On social media, users -- including YouTubers James Charles and Raiza Contawi -- created their own makeup looks inspired by the show's fictional contestants, such as Kang Sae-Byok, the cagey North Korean refugee. The looks mimicked "Squid Game" characters' gaunt eye bags, sweaty glow and even injuries -- topped off with a smattering of faux freckles to match Sae-Byok's.

It isn't unusual for TikTokers to turn to random items in the name of a beauty hack, but lube is perhaps one of the most unexpected ones.

After TikTok user Lukáš Kohutek apparently kicked off the trend this year -- beginning his beauty tutorials with a smear of Durex -- others jumped on the bandwagon. The gel is applied either with a brush or using your hands all across your face, and after it dries clear, foundation and the rest of your beauty look is applied on top.

According to YouTuber Grwady, the lube helps create a "smooth, fine texture" to your skin.
