1. The Wolf Cut
Photo: Glamour UK |
Before the style gained popularity here in the States, pre-BTS K-Pop stars in South Korea were already sporting the look—a younger, hipper cousin to the shag cut from the '70s and '80s. “It’s got a lot more texture than the traditional shag and there is usually more separation in the layers, giving it a fuller look on top that blends into a shaggy mullet all around,” says hairstylist Brittany Johnson, content manager for wig, weave, and extensions company Mayvenn. These longer layers are often complemented with some sort of bang (see above) to finish the look.
The natural texture of your hair will determine how you style the wolf cut—and you do need to style it. It's not a wash-and-go cut, and if you don’t spend a little time zhuzhing it, the cut can fall flat and make your hair look lifeless.
Part of what makes the wolf cut appealing is that the choppy layers are easy to create at home, since they’re intentionally uneven, as well as the versatility of the style given that you can wear it short or long and across different textures. It’s also favored for being a gender-neutral style, which is perhaps apropos for the times.
Though the haircut has gained global popularity in 2021 thanks to TikTok, it actually has storied (ahem) roots in South Korea, where K-Pop singers like Leeteuk from Super Junior and Taemin from SHINee (both second-generation idols that predate BTS) famously sported the look throughout the mid-2000’s. Recently, the wolf cut has had somewhat of a resurgence among current K-Pop singers and has also been seen on a handful of stateside celebrities like Miley Cyrus and Billy Eilish.

2. Long Layered Haircut

Long layered hairstyles look fantastic even if they are simple. If you’re lucky enough to have long hair but are unsure about how to style it, you’re in the right place.
Not everyone can manage to grow their hair long. Some simply can’t surpass a “genetic length”, others struggle with brittleness, and sometimes, long hair can just be a burden — it is literally heavy. If you’re in the last group, layered cuts are the best solution. You can grow your hair to envious lengths without the heaviness that all that hair carries with it.
The Main Principles of Successful Long Layered Hairstyles
- A layered haircut adds volume to long hair and allows for flexibility when styling. Ask your hairdresser for long layers at the back and smooth, graded layers to frame the face. You can balance the layers with long bangs that can be styled to either side or straight.
- Don’t forget about the details. Consider your personal style when choosing layers. Long layers that blend with one another look smooth and sleek, while a long shag hairstyle looks more undone and messy.
- When cutting the layers framing your face, cut the shortest layer so that it highlights the most flattering point on your face—most often the cheekbones or the chin.
Layering long hair removes just the right amount of weight to give the hair movement, without making the ends look over-layered and straggly. Long layered hairstyles typically look great on all face shapes and, depending on how they are styled, they could flatter some face shapes more than others.
A look at some of the popular long layered hairstyles:
- Layered long tresses till the waist
- Soft layers falling just below the shoulders
- Layers with bangs
- Layers with fringes
- Deep layers falling first over the years, then shoulders and then down the back
- Layered hair falling into a vee at the back
- Layered stressed with highlights
Long layered hairstylesare not just good for your looks but they are good for your busy schedule as well. Whether you tie it into a quick ponytail or put it up with a barrette or hair clip, it automatically falls into soft curls and layers around your face. This makes your face looks softer, stylish and sophisticated without any effort at all.
Long layered hairstyles also come handy when you are running behind for an event and don’t have time to go into an elaborate style. You can do a simple chignon and let the upper layers frame your face or simple leave it down. What would have looked boring in a plain long hair before will look fabulous now. All you need to do is give it a light brush and you are good to go. They look so good that you can actually do without elaborate jewelries as well.
Women who have straight hair will find it easier to adopt and maintain long layered hairstyles. Curly hair doesn’t show the layers well but then most of the time short hairstyles suit them better. Maintenance is easy. Regular washing with a high volume shampoo and a follow up with your stylist every 3 months are all that it takes to make your hair look good at all times.
3. Pixie cut
Photo: @mademoiselle_pixie |
A pixie cut is a short hairstyle generally short on the back and sides of the head and slightly longer on the top and very short bangs. It is a variant of a crop. The name is derived from the mythological pixie.
Pixie cuts were popularized first in the 1950s when Audrey Hepburn wore the style in her debut film Roman Holiday, and later in the 1960s by actress Mia Farrow (notably in Roman Polanski’s Rosemary's Baby), British supermodel Twiggy, and then even later by Laugh-In star Goldie Hawn. Jean Seberg also sported a pixie cut for Otto Preminger's Bonjour Tristesse and Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless.
The crop became fashionable again in the late 1970s and 1980s, with one of its most notable wearers being the actress Jacqueline Pearce in the British TV series Blake's 7. The crop also was big in the mid 1990s, and Halle Berry appeared in the 2002 James Bond film Die Another Day wearing a crop. Pixies are very easy to maintain and can be worn casually, or dressed up for special occasions.
In popular culture, the Pixie hairstyle is often portrayed in a negative way, associating the cut with people who have cut their hair because they have been traumatized, imprisoned or undergoing cancer treatment.
Today, the pixie feels just as poignant. Stylist Amber Maynard Bolt, who chopped Demi Lovato’s recent pixie, tells Vogue: “It was about her owning herself and choosing to do a look that represents what she feels on the inside. For many, hair represents a curtain of safety. There is a lot of fear with chopping your hair off. But once you do, you are able to own yourself in a way you never thought possible.”
Modern pixies look great with chunks of fun colors or in soft blondes or bold reds—you can create an entirely different, but equally as bold look once you add color to the mix. Tastemakers such as Zoë Kravitz, Halsey, and Teyana Taylor prove that you can wear a cool pixie with little effort. But the runway is where we’ve really seen the pixie go experimental with color: at Dolce & Gabbana’s Fall 2021 show, for example, hairstylist Guido Palau painted pixies all shades of cotton-candy pink and blue.
Ultimately, though, how you want to wear your hair is up to you. As Friedman says, “Hair is such a personal choice and can be a true representation of your identity. So, have fun with it and don’t be afraid of change.”

4. Modern Shag
Photo: Latest-Hairstyles.com |
The modern shag haircut can work for pretty much all hair types, says hairstylist Emely Miranda. Wavy, thick, and even curly textures are especially ideal, since shaggy cuts add shape, but a few subtle tweaks in how its cut can make it a great option for almost anyone.
When it comes to styling, the modern shag haircut is an especially great option for summer because you can easily forgo any and all hot tools. It’s all about wash-and-wear, as the end result should look visually effortless. You will want to incorporate a few key styling products, but whereas the shag of decades past relied on loads of stiff and rigid hairspray, the goal is to still keep the hair nice and soft and touchable.
If your hair is on the straighter side, work a lightweight mousse throughout your strands, focusing on massaging it into the roots for extra lift. If you want to enhance the texture even further once hair is air-dried, you can go back in with a curling iron to add a bit of bend at the ends. Finish with a blast of texture spray throughout.
If you have curly hair, apply a moisturizing curl-cream onto damp hair. Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Featherlight Styling Cream is a great pick for shaggy, curly cuts. You can then either air dry, or, if you are feeling motivated to bust out the blow-dryer, blow-dry on a low setting with a diffuser. At the end of the day, the more texture the better, making this one of those rare styles that actually looks better the less you do to it, according to Glam.

5. Bold bangs
Photo: Good Housekeeping |
Getting a major haircut always feels like a risk. For many, even cutting off a few inches is an enormous feat. But to go the extra mile and add bangs, well, that's a serious, commendable change. Only the truly stylish make the leap to rock forehead fringe—and that could be you.
Your face will look totally different once you get bangs. And, as Nicole Catanese of Harper's Bazaar points out, that's something to look forward to—as long as you choose a style that suits your face shape.
If you have a longer face, choose a soft style or a long side-swept bang, Catanese suggests. And if you have a rounder face, opt for a straight-edged bang or a heavy fringe with longer side pieces that graze your cheekbones. That can create the illusion of contour, without having to apply any makeup. Sounds like a win!
If you struggle with flat and lifeless hair, bangs will add volume and movement to your hairstyle. Just a few snips of the scissors will turn your dull 'do into one that you adore. Seriously, they'll make you want to perfect your signature hair flip.
Want a new haircut to usher in a new phase of your life? Bangs will do the trick. As Catanese points out, bangs dramatically change your appearance without breaking the bank or forcing you to change anything else about your daily life.
Some people might complain that their bangs are the cause of their skin problems. But on the flip side, bangs can also disguise them. Got a pimple on your forehead? Bangs will cover it. Over-pluck your eyebrows? Bangs will hide that, too.
Even if you wouldn't describe yourself as a polished professional, your bangs can make you seem like one. "The outward assumption about fringe owners is that they're as tidy, organized, and serious as their styled and shiny bangs," writes Melissa Kenny of Elle Australia. Just make sure you actually keep up with them. Poorly styled bangs are the opposite of polished.

6. Bob Cut
Photo: Hairstyles Weekly |
Your hair will rock. If you like being cool and looking hot (and who doesn't?) your hair is part of the plan. Forget about extensions and pastel streaks, two-tone pixie cuts and shags — you and your grownup hair don't need to go there. A bob will instantly upgrade mature hair that's blah, wimpy, straggly or stringy to a head-turning “look.” Not only will you be on trend now, this cut never ages so you can keep and tweak it to look elegant, casual or edgy with a few styling tricks. The bottom line: Extremes are over. Medium-length hair is the new sexy. For inspiration, take a look at Celine Dion, Monica Bellucci, Gabrielle Union and Jennifer Lopez.
A bob works like an instant facelift. Yes, it's an optical trick; the geometric shape of a bob provides a frame. Instantly your face assumes more structure: Cheekbones are restored, your jawline seems crisper, eyes look bigger — doubly so if you add bangs. Let's be honest: All long hair does (unless it's fabulous naturally, which is rare unassisted by extensions at 50) is drag down your face and emphasize lines. A bob can even give your body a boost. It visually stretches the neck and torso so you look taller, slimmer.
Any bob is a style multitasker. You don't have to be a pro to work the same bob a lot of different ways. For example, Sharon Stone's just-below-the-chin bob frames her face for a casual look. It can also be quickly blown back off the face to show statement earrings or, for a dressier look, be blown up for extra volume with a round brush and styling spray. Or it can easily be flat-ironed straighter with a side part and tucked behind the ear for another variation. We're talking minutes of work here — not hours of endless blow-drying.
You can let your curls, waves and natural texture fly. If you've been flat-ironing or chemically straightening your naturally wavy or curly hair into submission, a textured bob can free you from all that. Ask your stylist for a little layering to achieve a modern tousled look (just don't get talked into a full-on choppy shag) or request textured ends on your bob for separation. Women with naturally curly hair can push the look with a curling iron to get more definition and bouncy ringlets. A side-parted bob is the easiest textured bob to maintain and you can easily create a faux side-swept bang for extra drama. For warm weather, there is nothing cooler than a lob with beachy mermaid waves.
7. French Bob
Photo: Southern Living |
Among all the haircuts that come in and out of fashion, the bob never fails to remain a salon staple, thanks to the many different ways one can style it. From shoulder-grazing long bobs to cheekbone-hugging mini bobs, this cut can have anyone tempted to make the big chop. And as we're coming into a new year, there's one bob haircut trending beyond the rest, and it's been around for a long, long time. Say bonjour to the French bob.
Inspired by the super cropped bobs of the roaring 1920s, the French bob is similar to a one-length short bob, but sans any harsh bluntness. In fact, it's about as laissez-faire as it gets, focusing more on natural texture and easy styling to achieve the signature nonchalance of French style. It's made to hit just at the jawline or above to flatter the face (especially those cheekbones), and most pair it with breezy bangs to cap off the vintage look.
To copy the style, ask your stylist for a jawline-hugging short bob with subtle layering to eliminate any bluntness on the ends. As for bangs, it's to your discretion. Piecey bangs, full fringe, and retro curtain bangs all make a French bob feel even more effortlessly chic. The point is to be able to skip styling altogether, so choose what works for your hair type.
So if you're in need of a pick-me-up anytime throughout the year, there is no better way to enter a new season than with a French bob in tow.
8. Buzz cuts
Photo: Bustle |
A buzz cut is a term that is used to refer to any of a variety of short hairstyles, especially where the length of hair is the same on all parts of the head. Rising to prominence initially with the advent of manual hair clippers, buzz cuts became increasingly popular in places where strict grooming conventions applied. In several nations, buzz cuts are often given to new recruits in the armed forces. However, buzz cuts are also used for stylistic reasons.
Buzz cuts rose to popularity with the advent of manual hair clippers by the Serbian inventor Nikola Bizumić in the late 19th century. These clippers were widely used by barbers to chop hair close and fast. The clipper accumulates hair in locks to rapidly remove the hair from the head. This type of haircut was normal where strict grooming conventions were in effect. Buzz cut styles today include the butch cut, crew cut, and flattop.
The top of a buzz cut style may be clipped a uniform short length, producing a butch cut, or into one of several geometric shapes that include the crew cut, flattop, and other short styles. Also known as a fade haircut, the back and sides are tapered short, semi-short, or medium, corresponding with different clipper guard sizes. Buzz cuts can make the face look more defined and are popular with men and boys who want a short, low-maintenance hairstyle, as well as those with thinning or receding hairlines.
In countries such as Australia, China, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, military recruits are given buzz cuts when they enter training; this was originally done to prevent the spread of head lice, but is now done for ease of maintenance, cooling, and uniformity.
9. Princess Diana Cut
Photo: Pinterest |
When Kate Middleton changes her hair, it's like the earth shakes. News travels fast, so with the royal family's look under constant supervision, the family lives by a few key rules. Some, like the queen's guidelines about nude nail colors, are known, while others are more unspoken (for example: keep your hairstylist close). Given that scrutiny, there's no telling how insane the thought process must be when anyone wants to seriously change up their look—or the pressure they must face to keep it crowd-pleasing. Which makes it all the more surprising that the real story behind Princess Diana's iconic haircut went down in just a few hours.
As Princess Diana's former hairstylist, Sam McKnight, explains in his new book, the decision was entirely spur of the moment. Yep: If things had gone differently, the look that defined a generation wouldn't have existed. According to US Weekly, McKnight writes in Hair by Sam McKnight that the look was born from a single Vogue cover shoot in 1990. After McKnight tucked Diana's hair into a faux crop to work around her tiara, Diana, apparently, was intrigued. "I made her hair look short in the tiara for the shoot and she decided she liked it," McKnight writes. "As she was leaving, Diana asked what would I do to her hair if I had free rein…. I suggested cutting it short, and she, to my surprise, agreed, and we did it there and then.”
