Kareem Badawi, a student from the University of Alabama, was killed in a terrorist attack in New Orleans. He was buried on Friday. His father, Belal Badawi, shared how excited Kareem was to celebrate New Year's Eve in New Orleans with his friends.

Hundreds of people, including Kareem's classmates and fraternity brothers, attended the funeral near his home in Baton Rouge. After the service, Belal spoke about his son's tragic death. He said Kareem traveled to New Orleans with 15 friends to celebrate the new year.

Belal shared the last text messages he exchanged with Kareem. Kareem sent a "Happy New Year" text at midnight, and Belal replied, "Happy New Year – dad." Three hours later, Kareem was killed.

Imam Emad Nofal, chairman of the Islamic Center Baton Rogue, condemned the attack, which killed 13 other people. He said the attacker was a terrorist who did not represent Islam.

The death of Kareem Badawi, an 18-year-old freshman at the University of Alabama, has left the Episcopal School community in Baton Rouge grieving the loss of an exceptional young man.

Kareem Badawi was known for his kindness, strong work ethic, and potential, with friends honoring him through tattoos.

He was killed in a terrorist attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Eve. Another former classmate, Parker Vidrine, was also injured in the attack and remains in the ICU.

Belal learned about the attack the next morning. Kareem's parents tracked his phone to Canal and Bourbon Street. Kareem and his friend Parker went outside around 2:45 a.m., while their other friends stayed in. Parker was also injured and is in the hospital.

Belal said his son loved life and touched many people. Kareem was on an engineering scholarship and a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. His classmates and fraternity brothers attended the funeral to say goodbye.

Belal said killing innocent people does not achieve anything. Family friends are still in shock and struggling to cope with the tragedy.
