Who Is Robert Redford - Trending As Most Handsome Actor: Biography, Career and Personal Life. Photo IndieWire |
As the question spread across the platform a couple of uniform answers emerged including Paul Newman and the Winter Soldier star. To be fair, he's a handsome man and this makes a ton of sense. However, a lot of Twitter users were mortified to log on and see Redford's name trending. (Almost as amused as the Watchmen fans were to see President in 2024 trending at the same time.) But, as with a lot of these moments, it became just a time to celebrate a legendary actor.
Who Is Robert Redford?
Born on August 18, 1936, in Santa Monica, California, Robert Redford has proved to be one of the great talents in American film, starring in classics such as The Sting, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Candidate and The Way We Were. Redford also helped start the Sundance Film Festival, which has grown into one of the movie industry's most prestigious events and a great boon for indie filmmakers. The actor has also moved successfully into producing and directing, winning an Oscar for Ordinary People and receiving both directing and best picture nods for Quiz Show.
Robert Redford Early Life
Born Charles Robert Redford Jr. on August 18, 1936, in a multicultural neighborhood in Santa Monica, California, actor and director Robert Redford has proven to be one of the great talents in American film. He is equally at home behind the scenes as he is in front of the cameras. In addition to his own career, Redford has helped advance others in his field through the Sundance Institute and its related film festival.
Redford's father was a milk man who later worked as an oil company accountant, while his outgoing mother had a passion for literature and films. Taking after his uncle, Redford excelled at sports during his youth, running track and playing tennis and football while also having a robust romantic life. In other arenas, however, Redford said he floundered.
"Actually, I was a failure at everything I tried. I worked as a box boy at a supermarket and got fired. Then my dad got me a job at Standard Oil—fired again," he explained to Success magazine in 1980. Redford said he also had a few run-ins with the law for purloining hubcaps and sneaking onto other people's property to use their pools.
In 1954, Redford graduated from Van Nuys High School. But his mother died in 1955 from septicemia, and a deeply grieving Redford felt lost emotionally.
School was Not His Favorite Place “All I could think about was how to get myself out, once I was in, without relying on a bell ringing,” Redford told Rolling Stone, recalling the days he was trapped at a desk in the classroom. He used every excuse he could think of—stomach aches, bathroom breaks, needing to call home—just to get outside and wander around for a few minutes. “I was not a good student,” Redford said. “My mind was out the window. I drew underneath the desk. I drew pictures.” The classroom was not the place where he learned. In 2013, he revealed to NPR, “I wasn’t learning the way I was supposed to learn, and I think I realized that my education was going to happen when I got out in the world and engaged with other cultures, other places, other languages and had the adventure of exploration. And I felt, ‘That’s my education.’” |

Has Robert Redford ever dated Jane Fonda?
Redford has played the love interest of fellow Hollywood icon Jane Fonda in several movies, with the duo sharing some steamy on-screen moments.
However, despite their sizzling chemistry, the acting legends have never dated in real life, despite Fonda cheekily admitting in 2017 that she "lives for sex scenes with him".
She told the Venice Film Festival: "He’s a great kisser, so it was fun to kiss him in my 20s and to kiss him again in my almost 80s."
Redford and Fonda have played lovers in The Chase, Barefoot In The Park, The Electric Horseman and 2017's Netflix romantic drama Our Souls At Night.
Who is Robert Redford's wife?
Redford married Lola Van Wagenen, who dropped out of college to tie the knot with the actor, in 1958 at her grandmother's home.
Lola became a historian and environmental activist - but the pair divorced in 1985.
Redford married his second wife, longtime partner Sibylle Szaggars, in July 2009 in Hamburg.

Robert and Lola had four children - two boys and two girls.
Their first, Scott Anthony, suffered sudden infant death syndrome, passing away at just two-and-a-half months old in 1959.
Shauna Jean was welcomed on November 15, 1960, before David James was born May 5, 1962.
But James died on October 17, 2020, after a long battle with liver cancer.
Robert and Lola's youngest Amy Hart was born on October 22, 1970, and is an actress, director and producer like her father.
Robert also has seven grandchildren.
Robert Redford Career

In 1960 alone — the year he made his on-screen debut — Redford appeared in no less than a dozen different film and TV projects, including, notably, a Sidney Lumet-directed adaptation of “The Iceman Cometh” (with Jason Robards) as well as episodes of classic TV shows like “Maverick” and “Perry Mason.”
In 1966, he took home a Golden Globe for “Most Promising Newcomer” for “Inside Daisy Clover.”
And the following year, in 1967, he reprised the role he originated on Broadway for a film version of “Barefoot in the Park” alongside Jane Fonda. (He and Fonda have appeared together a whopping six times over the course of their careers, including most recently in last year’s “Our Souls at Night.”)
But at the very tail end of the decade, it was “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” that finally catapulted Redford into superstardom — thanks in large part to his co-star, Paul Newman.
Already a Hollywood A-lister himself, Newman went to bat for the younger actor after fellow superstar Steve McQueen dropped out due to a dispute over who would receive top billing.
Other big names like Jack Lemmon, Warren Beatty and Marlon Brando all passed on the role, as well.
According to Mental Floss, as one small concession to the studio execs, though, who viewed Redford as too much of a lightweight, the movie’s title, originally “The Sundance Kid and Butch Cassidy,” was flipped — and the rest, as they say, is history.
What resulted was a pitch-perfect blend of buddy comedy, heist movie and Western that gave Redford plenty of moments to shine as the laconic, impossibly cool gunslinger opposite Newman’s wily idea man.
Off-screen, Redford and Newman became lifelong best friends — what has been referred to as the original Hollywood bromance — going on to star again in the equally great “The Sting” in 1973, which won seven Oscars and earned Redford his only nomination for acting.
And Redford, of course, later reused the name “Sundance” a number of times: first for the huge tract of land he bought in Utah (formerly Timp Haven) and then again when he founded the Sundance Institute.
What are Robert Redford's biggest movies? In his long, illustrious film career Redford has starred in and directed some of Hollywood's biggest movies of all time: Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid (1969) Jeremiah Johnson (1972) The Sting (1973) All The President's Men (1976) A Bridge Too Far (1977) Ordinary People (director - 1980) Brubaker (1980) Out Of Africa (1985) A River Runs Through It (1992) Quiz Show (director - 1995) Spy Game (2001) Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) A Walk In The Woods (2015) Earth: One Amazing Day (narrator - 2018) Avengers: Endgame (2018) |
