Nyakim Gatwech's Biography
Gatwech was born on 27th January 1993 in Gambela, Ethiopia. She has two siblings, a sister and a brother. Her older sister, unfortunately, passed away. Her parents were born and bred in South Sudan.
However, they had to flee to Ethiopia because of the civil war that was taking place in the country at the time. The Sudanese model Nyakim Gatwech was born in Ethiopia during this time. Ethiopia is the country where the Mursi community that wear lip plates live. From Ethiopia, they migrated to Kenya and lived in refugee camps.
The family finally managed to migrate to the United States of America when Nyakim was fourteen years. They initially settled in Buffalo, New York, but later moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. While the model has never been to South Sudan, she identifies as a South Sudanese.
When she immigrated from the (US) United States to Buffalo, New York, she had to adjust to a new culture that came with its challenges.
But she didn’t accept the inhuman rule for refugees and black people. Now, people know her for her deep dark skin and her bravery to face the society with a genuine face.

Most of Nyakim’s early childhood experiences took place in refugee concentration camps as a result of fleeing from the war that broke loose in their home country, South Sudan. Her parents fled to Ethiopia before Nyakim was born so she wound up being born in Ethiopia.
Shortly afterward they once again moved to Kenya where they settled in refugee camps for some years before finally seeking asylum in the United States of America. Nyakim was aged 14 years when they were relocating to the USA where they initially settled in Buffalo, New York but later moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota.
There’s no information regarding her attendance in school during the times her family resided in Ethiopia and Kenya but when they moved to the USA, she was enrolled into the Minneapolis Community College.

When she was in middle school, she didn’t know how to cope with the negative comments she received daily. Back then, the way she dealt with the negative comments was either locking herself in her room and crying or trying to fight the people that said mean things about me. She knew it wasn’t solving anything. "Locking myself in my room was causing me to become depressed and fighting back was getting me suspended from school. My problems weren’t being solved, so I told my sister, “kids are making fun of me because of my complexion. What do I do? I wanna bleach [my skin] and all this stuff.” She told me that [skin bleaching] wasn’t the way to go about it," she said. |

Nyakim’s very first experience that exposed her to the idea of modeling took place at the St. Cloud State University where she participated in the schools’ local fashion show.
She gained a massive following on Instagram after posting a video of her interacting with an uber driver. The driver asked her whether she would bleach her skin for $10,000. Nyakim has participated in fashion shows, appeared in promotional posters including the 2017 Jigsaw film, and represents brands. These brands are in body apparel, cosmetics and clothing including Fenty Beauty and Fashion Nova.

| My advice is to build self confidence, feel confident in who you are and love yourself. There are so many people who love you and want to be your friend. If you are having self-confidence issues you are not going to see the people who love you, you are going to focus on the negative people. So my advice is to just talk to the people who love you. Talk to your friends, if you are being bullied talk to someone. Talk to family. Work on loving yourself and know that at the end of the day it comes down to you. If you don’t love yourself, no one else will. But as a little girl, how do you work on that? How do you work on your self confidence? I didn’t know how to. I cried a lot and locked myself in my room. |
| So I’m not expecting you to be able to do this right away. Confidence takes time. It takes time to build yourself when you’re at that stage. Just know there are more people that love you than hate you. |
